Strawberry exports increased by 66% on amount and 84% on income basis in 2021 compared to the previous year. Turkey provided a foreign exchange inflow of $46 million 118 thousand in 2021 from strawberries exported to 43 countries.
According to the data compiled by the AA correspondent from the Aegean Exporters’ Association, $25 million of income was obtained from the sale of 25 thousand 600 tons of strawberries in 2020.
Turkey, which increased its exports of strawberries to 42 thousand 500 tons in 2021 with an increase of 66% compared to the previous year, increased its income to $46 million 118 thousand with an increase of 84% compared to the previous year.
Russia became the country to which the most strawberries were sent, with sales of $27 million 810 thousand. This country was followed by Romania with $8 million 910 thousand and Iraq with $5 million 608 thousand.
Last year, Turkey exported strawberries to 43 countries.
“WE WILL DOUBLE THESE NUMBERS IN 2022”
President of Sultanhisar Chamber of Agriculture, Yuksel Yilmazoglu, said that from the geographical indication registered Sultanhisar strawberry, which meets a significant part of strawberry production in Turkey, a yield of approximately 70 thousand tons is obtained from an area of 14 thousand decades.
Stating that the strawberry produced in the district is now a brand, Yilmazoglu said:
“It is very important for our district with its quality and taste. It is very valuable in terms of exports and employment. It is the first in Turkey in exports. It ranks second in Turkey in terms of production. Therefore, it is very important. Especially in March-April, 10 thousand people are employed.”
Stating that strawberries are produced especially in greenhouses 12 months of the year and they have started the winter strawberry harvest, Yilmazoglu said, “Last year, 42 thousand 500 tons of strawberries were exported throughout Turkey. 25 thousand tons of strawberries were exported in our district. We doubled 2020. Hopefully, we will double these figures in 2022.”
