Finance ministers from European Union (EU) member countries have expressed their support for Kristalina Georgieva to serve another term as the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Belgian Finance Minister Vincent Van Peteghem made the announcement regarding the decisions made during a meeting held in Brussels among EU finance ministers.
Reflecting on Georgieva’s recent declaration of her intention to seek a second term in the leadership of the IMF, Peteghem stated that today, all EU countries had rallied behind her candidacy.
Highlighting Georgieva’s strong leadership demonstrated throughout recent crises, Peteghem emphasized the trust they have in her capabilities.
Peteghem outlined that the process would continue within the Executive Board of the IMF, expressing satisfaction in supporting Georgieva for a second term as the head of the organization.
Georgieva’s initial five-year term was set to conclude in September of this year. Traditionally, the IMF presidency is determined by Europeans.
Born in Bulgaria in 1953, Georgieva has previously served as a member of the European Commission and held high-ranking positions at the World Bank. Her track record and experience make her a notable candidate for a renewed term at the helm of the IMF.
