Turkiye: Domestic investors’ stock assets grew by 44% in six months

Stock assets of domestic investors grew by 44.2% in the first half of the year and reached ₺756.5 billion at the end of June. Stock assets of domestic investors have grown by 96.3% in the last year.

Turkish Capital Markets Association (TSPB) shared the financial market summary data for June.

Accordingly, the stock assets of domestic investors, which were ₺524.7 billion at the end of 2021, increased by 44.2% in six months and reached ₺756.5 billion at the end of June 2022.

According to the data compiled by the TSPB, compiled from the sources of the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (CBRT) and the Central Registry Agency (MKK), the stock holdings of domestic investors grew by 96.3% in a year covering the period from June 2021 to June 2022.

Despite the decline in Borsa Istanbul in June, the said growth in stock holdings of domestic investors was above both annual and semi-annual inflation.

As of the end of June this year, the share assets of domestic investors, which amounted to ₺756.5 billion, belong to corporate investors and legal entities with ₺359.5 billion, and individual investors with ₺397 billion.

The number of investors with a balance exceeded 2.5 million

In the Borsa Istanbul stock market, the number of investors with a balance increased in the first half of this year.

The number of investors with balance in the Borsa Istanbul stock market, which was 2 million 355 thousand at the end of 2021, increased by approximately 154 thousand in six months and reached 2 million 509 thousand in June.

The number of investors (active investors) who trade at least once a month in the stock market decreased by 193 thousand compared to the end of last year and decreased to 1 million 219 thousand.

TL deposits of domestic investors grew by 57.2% in six months

According to the data announced by the TSPB, the financial assets of domestic residents (domestic investors), which were ₺7 trillion 757 billion at the end of 2021, grew by 38.7% in six months and rose to ₺10 trillion 760 billion as of the end of June.

In the one-year period covering June 2021 and June 2022, the financial assets of domestic investors grew by 85.7%. According to the data, in the first half of this year, the highest growth in the financial assets of domestic investors was experienced in Government Domestic Debt Securities (GDS) with 59.1%.

GDDS assets of domestic investors, which were ₺1 trillion 495 billion at the end of last year, increased to ₺2 trillion 379 billion as of the end of June this year.

With the effect of the Currency Protected Deposit application, domestic investors’ TL deposits, which started to increase since the beginning of this year, continued to grow in June as well.

TL deposits of domestic investors, which were ₺1 trillion 829 billion at the end of 2021, increased by 57.2% in six months and reached ₺2 trillion 876 billion at the end of June.

In the same period, the increase in foreign currency deposits was limited to 20.4%. In the first half of this year, public Eurobond assets of domestic investors increased by 34.1% to ₺684.5 billion, while private Eurobond assets increased by 20.8% to ₺207 billion.

TL deposits of foreign investors increased by 46.6% in six months

According to the information given, the growth in the financial assets of foreign investors remained limited.

According to TSPB data, the financial assets of non-residents (foreign investors), which were ₺682.8 billion at the end of last year, increased by 12.5% in six months and reached ₺768.1 billion as of the end of June.

In the one-year period covering June 2021 and June 2022, the financial assets of foreign investors grew by 39.8%.

While foreign investors’ TL deposit assets increased by 46.6% in six months to reach ₺61 billion, their foreign currency deposit account assets increased by 35.7% in the same period and exceeded ₺325 billion.

According to TSPB data, the stock holdings of foreign investors increased by 7.6% compared to the end of last year and reached ₺373.9 billion as of the end of June.

The annual growth in the stock holdings of foreign investors was 33.8%. Foreign investors’ GDDS assets, on the other hand, decreased by 47% in six months compared to the end of last year and decreased to ₺24 billion as of the end of June.
