Toyota is recalling 211,000 Prius vehicles due to a door handle opening key issue

According to a statement from the company, Toyota has recalled a total of 211,000 Prius model vehicles worldwide, including 135,000 in Japan.

Accordingly, the faulty vehicles produced between November 2022 and April 2024 were found to have a rear seat door handle opening key malfunction.

Until the supply period of replacement parts to solve the problem is completed, Toyota announced that it has halted Prius model production domestically.

In a statement from the supplier company based in Aichi Prefecture, Tokai Rika Co., it was announced that the cost of the recall to the company could reach 11 billion yen ($71 million).

The Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) also reported that water could leak into the door hinges due to “insufficient waterproofing.”

The ministry stated that in this case, electronic rear door latches could short circuit, potentially leading to “the risk of rear doors opening while driving.”

According to state television NHK news, there have been three cases where Prius models’ doors opened at low speeds.
