Turkish seed company developed a first in the world: Resistant seeds

Antalya-based Anamas Seed R&D Center broke new ground in the world and developed seeds that are resistant to the brown fruit virus found in tomatoes.

Agricultural Engineer Serkan Kasapoglu said that the tomato brown fruit virus (TOPRFV) emerged in 2014 in Jordan and Israel. Stating that this disease started to be seen in greenhouses in our country in 2019, Kasapoglu said, “Seeds infected with this disease, fruit and leaves, plant residues and weeds are the source of disease development in plants. It is transported and spread by contact.”

‘WE PRODUCED RESISTANT SEEDS’

Senior agricultural engineer Serkan Kasapoglu, one of the partners of Anamas Seed R&D Center, said that he has been working on resistance studies against this virus since the first day the virus was reported. Kasapoglu also stated that as a result of the scans made in the tomato gene pool in the hands of the company, resistant seeds were obtained against this virus. He emphasized the importance of the R&D study they developed by saying, “It has been observed that tomato plants determined in accordance with the reports from our country and different countries (Italy, Spain and Middle East countries) are resistant to different levels.”

‘WE WILL PUT IT INTO SERVICE’

Serkan Kasapoglu said that Anamas Seed R&D Center will put these seeds, which they have developed at different levels, into the service of humanity. Stating that Anamas seed was established with domestic capital, Kasapoglu said, “It is an Antalya-based seed company that has been operating in the field of hybrid vegetable breeding and seed production for 25 years.” Stating that they continue their activities in the country and abroad, Kasapoglu said, “As a result of our successful work, we received the R&D center certificate by the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology in 2017. Turkey’s seed company will continue to breed the varieties it needs in this path, which the seed company has set out with a vision.”
