Turkiye: The share of new startups in employment was 5.5% in 2022

While the rate of startups born last year in Turkiye was 16.1%, their share in employment dropped to 5.5%.

Turkish Statistical Institute published “Entrepreneurship and Business Demography-2022” data.

Accordingly, the birth rate of enterprises in Turkiye in 2021 was 16% and the share of these enterprises in employment was 5.6%. While the birth rate of these startups increased to 16.1% in 2022, their share in employment decreased to 5.5%.

The highest birth rate in startups was in the wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles sectors, with 35.5% in 2022. This sector was followed by transportation and storage with 14.9% and manufacturing sectors with 12.1%.

The failure rate of startups in 2020 was 9.6%

While the failure rate of startups was 12.1% in 2019, it decreased to 9.6% in 2020. The share of dead startups in employment, which was 4.3% in 2019, was 3.6% in 2020.

The highest death rate in enterprises was detected in the wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles sectors with 33.9% in 2020. This sector was followed by accommodation and food service activities with 12.5% and transportation and storage with 11.8%.

75.3% of those born in 2021 from the startups survived in 2022. In 2020, the one-year survival rate was recorded as 84.1% and the two-year survival rate was recorded as 68.2%.

The rate of fast-growing enterprises relative to employment was 13.8% in 2022. In the same year, the rate of gazelle startups was calculated as 2.4%. The rate of fast-growing startups according to turnover was determined to be 20.7% in 2022, and the rate of gazelle startups was 2.9%.

In 2022, 31.8% of the fastest-growing enterprises in terms of employment operated in manufacturing, 20.3% in wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, and 14% in the construction sector.

In 2022, 32.3% of the fast-growing enterprises by turnover were in manufacturing, 27.6% in wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, and 8% in the construction sector.

According to employment, 27.5% of gazelle enterprises stood out in manufacturing, 14.4% in construction and 13% in wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles in 2022.

According to turnover, 26.9% of gazelle enterprises operated in manufacturing, 15.7% in wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, and 11.1% in construction in 2022.

In the manufacturing industry, 59.7% of startups born in 2022 produced low-tech products. In this sector, 27.5% of the startups born in 2022 were medium-low, 11.8% were medium-high, and 0.9% were startups that produced high-technology products.

Status of startups established in 2016 and later

The turnover share of enterprises established in 2016 or later was recorded as 22.2% in 2022. The second highest turnover share was held by startups established between 2011 and 2015, with 16.1%.

The employment share of enterprises whose establishment year was 2016 or later was calculated as 31.5% in 2021. Among the enterprises established in the 2011-2015 period, they took their place in the records with an employment share of 16.5%.

The export share of enterprises established in 2016 or later was 16.8% in 2022. It was observed that those established in 1990 and before had the highest export share with 17.8%.

The import share of enterprises whose establishment year was 2016 or later was recorded as 11% in 2022. Among the enterprises established in 1990 and before, they achieved the highest rate in this field with an import share of 34.7%.
