Mustafa Senocak, Chairman of the Board of Istanbul Leather and Leather Products Exporters’ Association (IDMIB), told Anadolu Agency (AA) that they reached the second-highest level of all time in January with $133.3 million of exports.

Senocak stated that last month, exports to OECD countries amounted to $70.6 million with an increase of 32.8% compared to the same month of 2021, and said, “We exported $59.2 million to EU countries with an increase of 37%. The country where we experienced the highest increase in exports was Jordan, with an increase of 648.3% and $2.3 million.”

Emphasizing that footwear was the sub-sector that made the most exports in January with an export of $81 million, Senocak said, “We achieved an increase of 16.7% in the export value of the footwear industry compared to the same month of the previous year, and the second highest export value of all time was recorded in footwear.”

HIGHEST EXPORT VALUE OF ALL TIME IN SADDLE EXPORTS

Mustafa Senocak shared the following information on sub-product groups:

“Exports of $20.4 million were realized with an increase of 36.1% in the saddlery sub-product group, while exports of $19.8 million were realized with an increase of 54.2% in the semi-finished & finished leather and processed fur sub-product group. In the leather and fur clothing sub-product group, exports amounted to $12 million with a decrease of 0.1%. In line with these figures, we have reached the highest export value to date in our saddlery exports.

In leather and leather products, our export increase on value basis was 21.5% last month, while our export increase on quantity basis was 12.6%. The fact that the increase in exports on the basis of value is higher than the increase in exports on the basis of quantity is also an indicator of the increase in the production of value-added products in our sector.”

Turkish Leather Confectioners’ Association (TDKD) President Gurkan Gozmen noted that the leather industry’s exports in January increased by 21.5% compared to the same period of the previous year, due to the increasing energy and leather-specific raw material price increases.

Gozmen said, “I can emphasize that this increase in the band of 20-30% in our leather industry, which is one of the leading sectors supporting the country’s exports, is within our expectations, but that our goal is to realize our exports on the basis of weight and in terms of sales, without being caused by cost increases.”
