Meta Introduces Enhanced Content Restrictions for a Safer Online Experience for Teens

New York – Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, announced new measures to further restrict inappropriate content on its platforms, aiming to provide a safer and age-appropriate experience for young users.

Meta to Implement Stricter Controls on Inappropriate Content for Teens

In a statement from Meta, the company emphasized the desire for young users to have safe and age-appropriate experiences within their applications.

The announcement highlighted that more than 30 tools and resources have been developed to support teens and parents, with over a decade of effort dedicated to policies and technologies addressing content that may violate rules or be deemed sensitive. Additional protections focusing on the content types seen by teens on Instagram and Facebook were introduced.

The statement emphasized regular consultations with experts in adolescent development, psychology, and mental health to help make the platforms safe and age-appropriate for young users.

Furthermore, the statement mentioned that users sharing content related to “self-harm” or “eating disorders” will continue to be directed to resources from relevant expert organizations. It was noted that the discovery of such content has been made more challenging, with search results being hidden when users search for related terms.

These changes have been rolled out for users under the age of 18, with the statement indicating that these adjustments will become fully effective on Instagram and Facebook in the coming months.

Updated Content Recommendation Settings

The statement highlighted that teens will now be automatically placed under the most restrictive content control settings on Instagram and Facebook. This adjustment, which was already applied to new users, has now been extended to include existing users of the platforms.

Additionally, the statement noted that the content recommendation controls within the applications will make it more challenging for users to encounter potentially sensitive content or accounts in places such as “search” and “explore.”

The announcement concluded by stating that these updates will be available to all users in the coming weeks.
