Turkey’s retail sales volume jumps 15% in August

Surge of over 23% in non-food sales pushes up main reading, according to TurkStat data

Turkey’s retail sales volume, a marker of growing consumer spending, jumped 15% year-on-year in August, according to official data released on Tuesday.

Excluding automotive fuel, non-food sales posted the largest increase of 23.4%,while food, drinks and tobacco sales climbed 7.3% compared to the corresponding month last year, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) said.

Automotive fuel sales jumped 6%, the data showed.

Textile, clothing and footwear sales rose the most among non-food items, surging 52.6% on an annual basis this August, while sales by mail order and the internet soared 44.4%.

On a monthly basis, Turkey’s retail sales volume saw a marginal rise of 0.3% in August.
