Turkey’s halal gelatin and collagen sector is growing with new investments

The gelatin production capacity of the facility, which started its activities in Gonen district of Balikesir for the supply of raw materials to the food and pharmaceutical industry, is aimed to be increased from 3 thousand 500 tons per year to 10 thousand tons in 3 years.

Production started in the factory, which was established in Gonen district of Balikesir for the halal production of gelatin and collagen, raw materials of the food and pharmaceutical industry.

It is aimed to increase the gelatin production capacity from 3 thousand 500 tons per year to 10 thousand tons in 3 years at the factory, which was put into operation in Gonen Deri Organized Industrial Zone (OSB), with an investment of approximately ₺50 million in partnership with Uyguner Deri and Jelyap.

Continuing its preparations for collagen production, the company plans to become an exporter of these raw materials imported by Turkey and to market products to many countries from Europe to America.

Burak Uyguner, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the company, told Anadolu Agency (AA) that the annual gelatin and collagen market in the world is around 400 thousand tons, while in Turkey it is 10-15 thousand tons.

Uyguner stated that Turkey also took advantage of being a Muslim country in terms of halal gelatin production, and said:

“We expect the market to grow in Turkey. Last year, an export of around $40-45 million was realized from Turkey. This corresponds to approximately 6 thousand 500-7 thousand tons of gelatin and collagen derivatives. We predict that this will increase very rapidly in the coming years. Turkey’s tannery infrastructure is also very suitable for supplying this raw material. There are large facilities in Turkey, we also have two facilities. We are planning a value chain in this way by fulfilling all our obligations in terms of food safety with a very healthy input that we supply from our own raw materials.”

Expressing that they aim to start exporting quickly as of the second half of this year, Uyguner said that they aim to export 40% of their production for the first year.

“Leaf gelatin is widely used in the world”

Emphasizing that there are large-scale soft confectionery manufacturers in Turkey and that there is a serious need for gelatin in the domestic market, Uyguner said, “Besides, we will not neglect our customers abroad at this point. We receive requests from many companies abroad, even when we were building the factory, we had customers who aspire to our production. Our talks continue.”

As business people, Uyguner said that they acted with thinking about questions like, “How many more value-added products can we provide to Turkey? How can we carry these products further and make even more value-added products? How much can we increase the dollar value of our kilogram exports?”

Noting that Turkey’s total exports are going well, Uyguner said, “Hopefully, it will exceed $200 billion by the end of the year. We will continue on the path we know as business people of Turkey and increase our exports day by day.”

Mentioning that powder gelatin is an industrial product, Uyguner stated that it is generally used in areas such as soft confectionery and pharmaceutical industry.

On the other hand, Uyguner stated that leaf gelatin makes this industrial product easy to use by the end consumer and creates a nice consistency with jelly cakes and custards, and provides a very pleasant transparent, glossy film. He added saying, “Leaf gelatin is widely used in the world, and there is a market for it in Turkey. There is no other producer in Turkey, we produced it from halal and beef.”
