Turkey’s exports to the USA and China increased in 2020 despite Covid-19

Turkey’s exports to the USA and China increased last year, despite the new type of coronavirus (Covid-19) epidemic.

Despite the decline in foreign sales to many countries in 2020 due to the negative effects of Covid -19, Turkey’s exports to the USA and China, one of the world’s leading economies, did not slow down.

According to the data compiled by AA correspondent from Turkish Exporters’ Assembly data, Turkey’s exports to the USA, which was $7 billion 893 million 415 thousand in 2019, increased by 12.2% and reached $8 billion 859 million 344 thousand in 2020.

Exports to China increased by 2.8% from $2 billion 582 million 580 thousand to $2 billion 654 million 539 thousand.

The automotive industry made the most exports to the USA last year with $951 million 71 thousand.

The automotive industry was followed by the carpet industry with $932 million 355 thousand, chemicals and products with $835 million 823 thousand, ready-made clothing and apparel with $793 million 627 thousand, defense and aviation industry with $784 million 227 thousand.

The highest increase in exports to the USA on amount basis was realized in the carpet sector with $267 million 224 thousand. The carpet sector was followed by the jewelry sector with $171 million 70 thousand, steel with $159 million 936 thousand, ready-made clothing, and apparel with $146 million 425 thousand, chemicals, and products with $94 million 420 thousand.

Mining products stood out in China

Last year, most exports to China were made with $1 billion 290 million 658 thousand of mining products. Following this sector, chemicals and products were exported to China for $299 million 140 thousand, iron, and non-ferrous metals for $202 million 507 thousand, electrical electronics for $110 million 807 thousand, furniture, paper, and forestry products for $90 million 80 thousand.

The highest increase in exports to China on a quantity basis was realized by the iron and non-ferrous metals sectors with $152 million 237 thousand.

This sector was followed by the furniture, paper, and forestry products with 47 million $448 thousand, steel with $46 million 547 thousand, ready-to-wear and apparel with $19 million 181 thousand, grain pulses, oilseeds, and products with $18 million 100 thousand.

On a provincial basis, exporters from Istanbul made the most exports to the USA and China.

Istanbul exported $3 billion 125 million 787 thousand to the USA last year. After Istanbul, Gaziantep exported $1 billion 109 million 901 thousand, Izmir $730 million 403 thousand, Ankara $704 million 536 thousand, Bursa $596 million 341 thousand to the USA.

Istanbul’s exports to China in 2020 amounted to $910 million 485 thousand.

Istanbul was followed by Ankara with $534 million 535 thousand, Bursa with $133 million 40 thousand, Izmir with $120 million 921 thousand, and Antalya with $99 million 39 thousand.
