Istanbul companies exported $5.7 billion worth of products all over the world

Last month exporters in Istanbul delivered the $5.7 billion worth of product they produced in 27 different sectors to 210 countries and regions.

According to the information compiled by the AA correspondent from the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TIM) data, Turkey’s exports increased by 2.5% in January compared to the same period of the previous year and reached $15 billion 48 million.

Istanbul companies signed exports of $5.7 billion in January.

While this figure was at the level of $5.6 billion in the same period of last year, this increased by 2.9% to 5.7 billion dollars despite the effects of the new type of coronavirus (Covid-19) epidemic in the exports of Istanbul companies.

The share of Istanbul companies in Turkey’s total exports in January was 38.1%.

The lion’s share is ready-to-wear and apparel

The ready-made clothing and apparel industry took the lion’s share in January exports of Istanbul companies with 17.9%. The product exports of Istanbul companies operating in the sector in question decreased by 0.3% to $1 billion 30 million last month compared to the same period of 2020.

Despite this decrease, the sector maintained its leadership in exports from Istanbul. In the same period, after the ready-made clothing and apparel industry, the other sector that exports the most products from Istanbul was chemicals and products with $915 million 928 thousand, followed by the steel industry with $555 million 980 thousand.

$485 million 889 thousand of electrical – electronics, $399 million 464 thousand of iron and non-ferrous metals, $399 million 332 thousand of automotive, $308 million 962 thousand of jewelry, $296 million 485 thousand of textiles and raw materials, $229 million 385 thousand of machinery and accessories, $180 million 456 thousand of furniture paper and forestry products were exported from Istanbul.

The highest increase in exports was in the ornamental plants and products sector

In January, it was seen that the exports of Istanbul companies increased in 12 sectors and decreased in 15 sectors. The sectors that have achieved the increase in foreign sales are listed as ornamental plants and products, defense and aviation industry, fresh fruits and vegetables, chemicals and products, nuts and products, iron and non-ferrous metals, jewelry, electrical – electronics, machinery, and accessories, air conditioning industry, textiles, and raw materials.

Among these, the sector in which Istanbul companies increased their exports the most in January was ornamental plants and products with 52.8%.

The exports of the ornamental plants and products sector increased from the level of $477 million in January 2020 to $729 million in the same period of this year.

In the same period, the sector with the highest decrease in exports in Istanbul was ships and yachts. The exports of the sector decreased by 54.4% in January from $54 million 139 thousand to $24 million 674 thousand.

Largest market is Germany

In January, the biggest market of Istanbul companies was Germany. Foreign sales from Istanbul to Germany, which also has an important place in the country’s exports, increased by 3.8% in January compared to the same period of the previous year and rose from $572 million 665 thousand to $594 million 276 thousand.

Following Germany, the United Kingdom with $325 million 665 thousand, Italy with $301 million 283 thousand, the USA with $274 million 7 thousand, Spain with $265 million 461 thousand, France with $244 million 249 thousand, Israel with $208 million 280 thousand, the Netherlands with $152 million 365 thousand, Iraq with $141 million 660 thousand, Poland with $118 million 466 thousand were among the biggest markets of Istanbul companies.

In the said period, the country with the highest increase in exports from Istanbul on amount basis was Lebanon with $80.8 million. Lebanon was followed by the USA with $65.2 million, Switzerland with $49.8 million, France with $49 million, and Hong Kong with $42.5 million.

On the other hand, it was noteworthy that companies operating in 27 sectors in Istanbul exported their products to 210 countries and regions in January.
