Turkish leather shoes sector made exports worth $422M in first 6 months of 2020

According to the data of Turkish Exporters Assembly, Turkey’s leather shoes export was valued at 422 million dollars in the first 6 months of 2020, yet this value was nearly 514,6 million dollars in the first 6 months of 2019; The measures regarding the Covid-19 caused 18 percent annual decrease in export.

When we based our data on months, leather shoes sector export reached 84,2 million dollars with a 17,5 percent of increase on January; sector export was able to increase only by 5,1 percent and fortunately never valued under 100 million dollars on February when the pandemic burst out. On March, the first Covid-19 case was seen in Turkey and measures were taken; given that, the export of leather shoes sharply decreased by 24,9 percent compared to March 2019 and valued at 92,7 million dollars.

The greatest decrease in export was on April

Export was nearly stopped on April due to closed borders of many countries and Covid-19 measures; leather shoes sector export was valued at only 35,6 million dollars on April 2020. 87,9 million dollars worth export was made on April 2019; hence, there was 59,5 percent of decrease when we compare annually. Given that, we can say the greatest decrease in export was in April.

The sector gradually healed in June

Leather shoes sector made an export valued at 38,1 million dollars on May 2020, there was 56,6 percent of decrease when we compare it with export value of May 2019.  

The sector gradually healed itself in June when economy started to run and restrictions were gradually removed. Leather shoes industry made an export worth 65,9 million dollars on June 2020; there is 51,8 percent of increase compared to June 2019.
