Turkey: The deposit system is coming to shopping malls and markets in 2022

The deposit period begins for packages produced using paper, plastic, glass and metal. When these packages are returned to the market, the fee can be refunded. So what are the benefits of this system? PAGEV President Yavuz Eroglu, who participated in the broadcast in A Haber, answered this question and made important statements about the ‘deposit system’.

A new era begins in shopping malls and markets. According to this, packages produced using paper, plastic, glass and metal can now be refunded when they are brought back to the shopping place.

FEE WILL BE REFUNDED ON RETURN OF PACKAGING

A new era begins in Turkey as of January 1, 2022. After the paid bag application, which was introduced to reduce environmental pollution and the burden of nature, the deposit system for packages made of paper, plastic and metal will now be valid in markets and shopping malls. Accordingly, if the packaging is returned, the fee will be refunded.

Yavuz Eroglu, President of the Turkish Plastics Industrialists Research, Development and Education Foundation (PAGEV), who participated in the broadcast in A Haber, evaluated the ‘Deposit Return System’, which is both environmentally friendly and will contribute to the country’s economy.

‘WILL BE PUT IN SERVICE AFTER 1 JANUARY 2022’

Emphasizing that Turkey’s beverage packaging consumption is ₺20 billion a year, Eroglu said, “This figure is expected to increase to 30 billion in 2030. Therefore, recycling them is a very important issue on our agenda.”

‘DEPOSITO SYSTEM IS SUCCESSFULLY USED IN 15 COUNTRIES’

First, it will encourage recycling. When our citizens return the packaging of the product they used after shopping, they will get the deposit of this product back. Therefore, this is a system that encourages citizens to recycle. It will also have serious social implications. This is a system that is currently implemented and successful in about 15 countries around the world.

‘WILL ALSO HAVE SERIOUS CONTRIBUTIONS IN SOCIAL TERMS’

Why socially? For example, wastes are collected in the apartment and given to the employee of that apartment or to the needy, so that he can throw it into the deposit system. Children can be given pocket money. It is something that has such a social contribution.

Listing the benefits of the deposit system in numbers, Eroglu used the following statements:

  • 1 million tons of additional waste will be prevented from being dumped into the environment.
  • In addition, it will contribute ₺1.4 billion to the economy.
  • The wastes will meet the raw material needs of the industry in a clean way without going to waste. It will contribute to the reduction of the foreign trade deficit.
  • Citizens will contribute to both the economy and the environment at the same time.
  • It will contribute to the reduction of 263 thousand tons of carbon emissions.

‘IT WILL BE A SYSTEM THAT CAN BE ADAPTABLE FASTER THAN THE BAG SYSTEM’

Eroglu said, “This system is a system that can be adapted more easily than the bag system. Because we buy the bag by paying a price. In this case, on the contrary, we get the price back in the package that is taken. In other words, it is a system that does not have any financial burden on an environmentally conscious citizen.”
