Turkiye: Automobile sales increased by 9.1% in July

Turkiye’s automobile and light commercial vehicle sales increased by 9.1% last month compared to the same period of 2021, reaching 52 thousand 206 units.

Automotive Distributors Association (ODD) published the Automobile and Light Commercial Vehicle Market Evaluation Report for the January-July period and July.

Accordingly, total sales of automobiles and light commercial vehicles in Turkiye decreased by 7.3% in January-July 2022 compared to the same period of the previous year and amounted to 410 thousand 110 units.

In the said period, automobile sales decreased by 7.9% to 319 thousand 313 and light commercial vehicle sales decreased by 5.3% to 90 thousand 797 units.

SALES INCREASED IN JULY

The automobile and light commercial vehicle market increased by 9.1% in July compared to the same period of the previous year and reached 52 thousand 206 units.

In July, automobile sales increased by 13% compared to the same month of the previous year and became 41 thousand 31, while light commercial vehicle sales decreased by 3.1% to 11 thousand 175.

Automobile and light commercial vehicle sales decreased by 16.4% compared to the 10-year average sales in July. Automobile sales decreased by 14.9% compared to 10-year July average sales, and light commercial vehicle sales decreased by 21.4% compared to 10-year July average sales.

CARS THAT HAVE THE LOWEST TAX WERE PREFERRED

In the January-July period, 88.9% of the market was composed of cars in the A, B and C segments with low tax rates.

While C segment cars took the lead with 157,778 units and a share of 49.4%, B segment cars took a 39% share with 124 thousand 376 units.

SUVs were the most preferred body type with 39.6%. SUV cars were followed by sedans with 36.7% and hatchback (H/B) cars with 21.6%.

70.8% OF THE SOLD CARS WERE GASOLINE-POWERED

In the said period, 70.8% of the cars sold were gasoline, 17.1% diesel, 9.5% hybrids and 1.8% autogas vehicles. The number of electric car sales was 2 thousand 532.

In the January-July period, automobile sales below 1600cc decreased by 8.8% to 88.8%, automobile sales in the 1600-2000cc range decreased by 43.5% to 0.7%, and automobile sales over 2000cc decreased by 31.1% to 0.2%.

77.1% of the cars sold were with automatic transmission and 22.9% with manual transmission.

SALES BY TAX CHANGES

According to special consumption tax brackets and engine types in the automobile market, 85.4% of the sales were in gasoline/diesel engine type and 80% tax bracket, 6.8% in gasoline/diesel engine type and 70% tax bracket.

Looking at the light commercial vehicle market by body type, the van body type had a share of 74.7% and the pickup truck body type had a share of 13.5%.
