Anchovy exports closed the first half of the year with an increase of 7%

Turkiye’s 6-month anchovy exports, despite the low yield, increased by 7% in value compared to last year and reached $5 million 823 thousand 665.

Anchovy was exported to 23 countries in the first half of the year from Turkiye, which has made a name for itself in fisheries products, according to the compilation of the Eastern Black Sea Exporters’ Association (DKIB) data by AA correspondent.

Anchovy exports, which were recorded as $5 million 458 thousand 703 in the January-June 2022 period, increased by 7% in the same period of this year and reached $5 million 823 thousand 665.

Although the yield was not at the expected level due to climatic factors, the highest demand for anchovy, which closed its exports in the first half of the year with an increase, came from France, Belgium and the USA.

In the 6 months of the year, $2 million 351 thousand 228 worth of anchovies were exported to France, $1 million 575 thousand 321 to Belgium, and $546 thousand 87 to the USA.

Unlike the same period last year, anchovy was sold to Sweden, Uzbekistan, Iraq, Lebanon, Malaysia and Somalia in the first 6 months of this year.

“We are hopeful about anchovy export”

Ahmet Hamdi Gurdogan, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors of DKIB, told Anadolu Agency (AA) that although the anchovy season is over, some companies continue to export their products until the beginning of the new season.

Stating that the amount of fish caught in anchovy remained low in the 2022-2023 season, Gurdogan said, “This situation caused both high prices and product shortages. Therefore, despite the increase in our anchovy exports, it remained below the expected level.”

Expressing that they are hopeful for anchovy exports, Gurdogan said, “As we repeat every time, the demand of the sector is the urgent establishment of practices that will allow anchovy to become abundant and reach a larger size by imposing a one-season hunting ban with strict control. This situation will make a very important contribution to our exports and the abundance of the product in the coming years.”
