Turkey: Huge improvement in cross-border e-commerce

In the study of the United Nations Trade and Development Conference, Yerliara Senior Manager Aydin stated that the number of cross-border B2C shoppers increased by 130 million people worldwide in 2016-2018, reaching 330 million people.

A report was prepared by Yerliara with the support of Istanbul Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metals Exporters Association (IDDMIB) and Home and Kitchenware Manufacturers and Exporters Association (EVSID). Dr. Arzu Aydin, Senior Manager of Yerliara, whose opinions were included in the prepared report, stated that although there are differences in the figures regarding the cross-border e-commerce volume in the studies, the figures revealed that e-commerce offers very important opportunities for businesses of all sizes.

Aydin noted the following:

“In the study of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, it is seen that between 2016-2018, the number of cross-border B2C shoppers all over the world increased by 130 million in total and reached 330 million people in 2 years. The magnitude of this figure is clearer when compared to 39.3 million people who shop online in Turkey in 2019. Surveys conducted globally also confirm the importance of cross-border trade. In 2019, Visa’s Global Sellers E-Commerce study was carried out with approximately 1,000 senior executives in 10 major markets including Australia, Canada, China / Hong Kong, France, Germany, Mexico, Singapore, Spain, the United Kingdom and the USA. 87% of respondents in their study stated that they believe online sales are one of the biggest opportunities for companies to enter new markets.”

Again, in the same study, it was seen that 66% of the participants sold their products to international markets and their cross-border turnover had an average of 31% of their total turnover. It was observed that all of the large-scale companies and 90% of the medium-sized companies took action to enter new markets, but this rate was around 71% in small-scale companies. In the Cross-Border Consumer Survey conducted by PayPal in 2018, it is observed that there are advantageous points for SMEs in our country. “

Stating that Yerliara.com brings together high value-added products produced with local capabilities in a digital environment, Aydin said, “We are planning to make a roadmap series on cross-border e-commerce to help our companies do cross-border e-commerce at the same time. We have published our report titled The New Navigation of Commerce: Cross-Border E-Commerce, the first of the series we have prepared for this purpose.”

“E-commerce between companies has become increasingly important”

IDDMIB Chairman Tahsin Oztiryaki stated that e-commerce is a trend that cannot be excluded from the sector, and that e-commerce has a certain share in products that appeal to the end consumer, and that this share will increase year by year.

Stating that business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce is also becoming increasingly important, Oztiryaki said, “At this point, as IDDMIB, we lead important virtual initiatives. In 2020, we held more than 1,300 bilateral meetings with the participation of 140 Turkish companies and 632 foreign companies in 15 countries.”

Burak Onder, President of EVSID, said, “First of all, we need to determine our main strategy in e-export, as in traditional exports. While doing this, it is very important to evaluate our strengths and weaknesses correctly. Besides our production power, we should analyze our competencies in logistics, marketing, customer management and information technologies.”
