Turkey exported $1 billion 836 million of pharmaceuticals in 2020

Turkey’s exports of pharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical products increased to $1 billion 836 million with an increase of 26.8% compared to the previous year, with the effect of the new type of coronavirus (Covid-19) epidemic.

The sector, which has entered a rapid growth process in recent years due to the effects of diseases, is the third largest sector in the world. Turkey has a highly developed pharmaceutical industry in terms of production standards, technology and capacity.

SOUTH KOREA RANKED FIRST IN OUR EXPORTS

According to the Turkish Pharmaceutical Industry 2020 report published by the Pharmaceutical Industry Employers’ Union, 61.6% of pharmaceutical imports from 90 countries were made from the European region. While the total figure of Turkey’s pharmaceutical imports in 2020 was $5 billion 640 million, Germany was the country with the highest imports. Compared to the previous year, Turkey also increased its pharmaceutical exports. South Korea ranked first with $615.8 million in Turkey’s exports of pharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical products last year. Iraq followed it with an export of $94.8 million. Imported medicine in Germany amounted to $1 billion 116 million in 2020. Germany was followed by the USA, South Korea, Italy and China, respectively.

TREATMENT AND PROTECTION PHARMACEUTICALS EXPORTED

With the effect of the coronavirus epidemic, in Turkey’s pharmaceutical exports in 2020, pharmaceuticals (dosed) prepared for use in treatment/protection were purchased with a value of $1.1 billion. This was followed by products such as human and animal blood, serum, vaccines and toxins, and pharmaceuticals. Last year, the product group whose exports increased the most was glycosides with 564.3%. This product group was followed by provitamins and vitamins with 83.8% and hormones with 77.1% in the proportional increase. The pharmaceutical industry offers more than 12 thousand products in Turkey with approximately 680 establishments, 99 pharmaceuticals and 11 raw material production facilities operating at international standards. 88% of Turkey’s pharmaceutical needs are met by domestic production. Continuing to grow with its high production capacity and use of advanced technology, the Turkish pharmaceutical and pharmaceutical industry impresses with its export performance. During the pandemic, the sector’s exports grew by 26.8%.

PHARMACEUTICAL EXPORT IS INTENSE IN ASIA

When we compare the import rates compared to the previous year, $414 million of pharmaceutical imports were made from South Korea in 2019, while this rate increased by 45% to $598 million in 2020. On the other hand, while $406 million of pharmaceutical imports were made from France in 2019, it decreased to $299 million in 2020 with a decrease of 26%. The region with the highest concentration of pharmaceutical exports was the Asian region with 62.4%. When the countries to which exports are made in 2020, exports were made to 177 countries, especially the European Union, Commonwealth of Independent States, North Africa and the Middle East.
