Travel expenditures of domestic tourists last year increased by 80.2% compared to the previous year and amounted to ₺58 billion 104 million 752 thousand.
Turkish Statistical Institute announced the “household domestic tourism” data for the fourth quarter of 2021.
Accordingly, 8 million 948 thousand people residing in the country traveled in the last quarter of last year. The total number of trips made by travelers with one or more overnight stays within the country increased by 48.9% compared to the same quarter of the previous year and amounted to 10 million 706 thousand. Travelers in this quarter made 80 million 378 thousand overnight stays. The average number of overnight stays was recorded as 7.5 nights.
When evaluated on an annual basis, the total number of trips in 2021 increased by 23.2% compared to the previous year and reached 52 million 774 thousand. The total number of overnight stays made by travelers last year decreased by 2.2% compared to 2020 and became 458 million 872 thousand. The average number of overnight stays was 8.7 in 2021.
Travel expenditures increased
In the last quarter of 2021, domestic tourists’ travel expenditures increased by 98.7% compared to the same quarter of the previous year and amounted to ₺11 billion 497 million 945 thousand.
93.4% of these expenditures were personal with ₺10 billion 744 million 441 thousand, 6.6% of them were package tour expenses with ₺753 million 504 thousand. The average expenditure per trip was ₺1074.
Last year, total travel expenditures made in domestic trips increased by 80.2% compared to 2020 and were recorded as ₺58 billion 104 million 752 thousand.
91.2% of these expenditures were personal with ₺53 billion 9 million 281 thousand, and 8.8% of them were package tour expenditures with ₺5 billion 95 million 471 thousand. The average expenditure per trip was ₺1101.
Distribution of expenditure types within travel expenditures
When the distribution ratios of expenditure types in total travel expenditures were analyzed in the October-December period of last year, it was seen that food and beverage expenditures with 32.6%, transportation expenditures with 31.5% and accommodation expenditures with 10.4% had the highest share.
When the change rates of these expenditure types compared to the same period of 2020 are analyzed, an increase of 82.8% in food and beverage expenditures, 90.6% in transportation expenditures and 146.8% in accommodation expenditures was calculated.
When the annual distribution of expenditure types within travel expenditures is analyzed, food and beverage expenditures with 31.4%, transportation expenditures with 26.3% and accommodation expenditures with 14% have the highest share.
When the annual rate of change in these types of expenditures is analyzed, an increase of 54.7% in food and beverage expenditures, 62.6% in transportation expenditures and 118.9% in accommodation expenditures were recorded.
Visiting relatives comes first
In the last quarter of last year, trips to visit relatives ranked first with 61.6%. This was followed by “travel, entertainment, vacation” with 23.6% and “health” with 7%.
When the purpose of travel is evaluated on an annual basis, “visiting relatives” ranks first with 58.8%, “travel, entertainment, vacation” comes second with 30.2%, and “health” travels take the third place with 5%.
Travelers mostly stayed at a friend or relative’s home
Those who traveled in the October-December period of 2021 stayed mostly at “friends or relatives’ houses” with 51 million 628 thousand overnight stays. According to accommodation types, “own house” ranked second with 17 million 532 thousand overnight stays, and “hotel” ranked third with 5 million 270 thousand overnight stays.
When the types of accommodation are evaluated on an annual basis, those who traveled last year mostly preferred to stay at “friends or relatives’ houses” with 305 million 542 thousand overnight stays. While “own house” took the second place with 84 million 814 thousand overnight stays, “hotel” took the third place with 34 million 218 thousand overnight stays.
