The exports of the ferrous and non-ferrous metals sector reached $3.27 billion in the first quarter of this year.

According to the statement made by the Istanbul Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metals Exporters’ Association (IDDMIB), the industrial sector continues to be the locomotive of the Turkish economy with its production, exports and employment.

Turkiye’s exports reached $23.6 billion in March with an increase of 4.4% compared to the same month of the previous year, breaking the record for monthly exports of all times.

March exports of the sector decreased by 15.1% compared to the same month of the previous year and reached $1.22 billion, while exports in the January-March period amounted to $3.27 billion with a decrease of 13.9% compared to the same months of the previous year.

In the first three months of the year, the sector took a 5.3% share from the general export and became the 6th sector with the highest export among the industrial sectors.

“The earthquake disaster affected the sector’s exports by 10%”

Cetin Tecdelioglu, Deputy Chairman of the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TIM) and Chairman of the Board of Directors of IDDMIB, whose views were included in the statement, said the following regarding the unit export prices of the sector:

“The unit export price of the ferrous and non-ferrous metals sector in the January-March 2023 period decreased by 0.26% compared to the same period of the previous year and became $4,62 per kilogram. The exports of our industry reached 723.2 thousand tons in the same period. In March, exports to the European Union countries, the region to which the sector exports the most, amounted to $674.5 million.

Among the countries with the highest exports on a country basis, Germany ranked first with $168.4 million, Italy ranked second with $96.1 million, and the USA ranked third with $58.8 million.

Expressing that the earthquake disaster in Kahramanmaras affected 10% of the sector’s exports, Tecdelioglu said, “Our kitchen industry, our metal industry are too much in the earthquake geography. Factories are still working at 30-40% capacity. Especially the fact that the kitchen industry in Kahramanmaras has been seriously affected and the metal industry has been affected in other cities negatively affects the exports of the industry at the level of 10%.”

Noting that the Far East, especially China, has taken action with very competitive prices in the whole world geography with the decrease in container prices, Tecdelioglu said, “China’s aggressive competitive prices have put a lot of pressure on us in this period. In order to be competitive, we will carry out more B2B meetings, more exhibition participation and more visits within the scope of the Far Countries Strategy.”

Tecdelioglu stated that an increase was observed in exports to the USA, and that the increase in this geography excited the sectors, and that the efforts to increase exports in the USA with fairs and B2Bs would continue.
