Toyota introduces sports car new GR 86

The front-engined and rear-wheel drive GR 86 is planned to be available in Europe as a global model.

Toyota made the world presentation of the sports car GR 86, the newest member of the GR product range.

According to Toyota’s statement, the new GR 86 continues to reflect the driving characteristics of the GT86, which was first introduced in 2012 and achieved a sales performance of over 200,000 units. The front-engined and rear-wheel drive GR 86 is planned to be available in Europe as a global model.

The Toyota GR 86 stands out as the lightest four-seater coupe in its segment, weighing 1,270 kilograms thanks to a series of weight-reduction efforts such as the aluminum roof and body panels. The volume of the new lightweight four-cylinder engine featured in the GR 86 has been increased to 2.4 liters, thus increasing its performance compared to its predecessor.

The new GR 86 has a length of 4,265 mm, a width of 1,775 mm, a height of 1,310 mm and a wheelbase of 2,575 mm. While these dimensions remained almost the same as the GT86, the center of gravity was kept low to increase agility. The new vehicle’s body stiffness is increased by around 50% compared to the GT86, and it will have sharper handling and better steering ability.

The GR 86 is aimed to have the best handling and balance in its class, together with functional aerodynamic parts such as the front air ducts and side panels in the vehicle, which has been developed using Toyota Gazoo Racing’s experience in motorsport.
