It is aimed to increase hazelnut exports from Turkiye to America

Within the framework of the “Supporting the Development of International Competitiveness” project prepared by Giresun Commodity Exchange, it is aimed to increase hazelnut promotion activities for North and South American countries this year.

Giresun Commodity Exchange President Hamza Boluk told the AA correspondent that Turkiye’s largest hazelnut export market is Europe.

Boluk stated that they, as well as some institutions and organizations in the sector, are working to identify new markets.

Stating that they brought together European companies operating in the chocolate industry and Turkish exporters at the meetings organized in Germany in November 2023 within the scope of the project supported by the Ministry of Commerce, Boluk stated that their target in 2024 is North and South American countries.

Turkish hazelnuts will be introduced in Canada

Boluk stated that they will participate in the food fair to be held in Canada in May 2024 and promote Turkish hazelnuts.

Explaining that they will bring Turkish exporters and buyer companies together at the fair, Boluk said, “We will have promotional activities to market our hazelnuts, especially our ‘Giresun quality’ product, to North and South American countries. We will work to ensure that our companies sign new commercial agreements.”

Boluk stated that they aim to provide hazelnuts to people in countries with large populations, such as the USA, Canada and Brazil, and said, “We, like other stakeholders in the sector, are making efforts to promote our hazelnuts and increase our trade. Our aim is to increase our market and feed more Turkish hazelnuts to the world.”

Underlining that there are no definitions such as “far” or “near” in international trade, Boluk made the following evaluation:

“It is not far for us to be in North and South America or Far Eastern countries because we need to take hazelnuts out of Europe. If we stay in the same market, we may come to a point where we cannot sell what we produce. Therefore, while trying to increase our production, we must be at the point of being able to sell what we produce in the same way. We attach great importance to the sale of Turkish hazelnuts to North and South American countries as well as Far Eastern countries, especially China. We export to countries such as Brazil, Canada and the USA. But is it at the desired level, no. North and South American countries, especially the USA, are very open markets. The USA has a population of nearly 400 million, but if we look at the hazelnuts it consumes, there are very few in the market. Other countries are the same way. Therefore, we need to sell more of our hazelnuts to the markets in American countries.”

According to data from the Black Sea Hazelnut and Products Exporters Association, Turkiye exported 283 thousand 518 tons of hazelnuts to 121 countries last year, generating an income of $ billion 864 million 551 thousand 43.

3 thousand 240 tons of exports were made to the USA, generating an income of $24 million 564 thousand 933.

5 thousand 946 tons of hazelnuts were exported to Brazil for $39 million 33 thousand 613, and 3 thousand 188 tons of hazelnuts were exported to Canada for $19 million 696 thousand 302.
