The rate of internet users in Turkey increased to 82.6%

The ratio of households with internet access in Turkey has increased to 92%. The rate of online shopping was 48.3% for men and 40.3% for women.

The results of the “Household Information Technologies Usage Survey-2021” conducted by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) have been announced.

According to the research, the rate of internet usage in the country was 82.6% in the 16-74 age group. This rate was recorded as 79% last year.

Internet usage rate was 87.7% for men and 77.5% for women in the 16-74 age group.

The proportion of households with internet access throughout the country reached 92%. This rate was recorded as 90.7% last year.

According to the Statistical Regional Units Classification (NUTS) Level 1, the proportion of households with internet access was Istanbul, with the highest 97.1%, followed by the Western Anatolia (Ankara, Konya, Karaman) Region with 94.2%.

BROADBAND INTERNET ACCESS RATE IS 92%

The rate of households accessing the internet via broadband was 92% this year. Accordingly, 61.9% of the households accessed the internet via fixed broadband connection (such as ADSL, cable internet, satellitenet, fiber), while 88.5% of them used mobile broadband. The rate of households with broadband internet access was 89.9% last year.

It was observed that 80.5% of all individuals in the 16-74 age group used the internet regularly (almost every day or at least once a week) during the first three months of this year. Regular internet use was recorded as 76.5% last year.

The rate of individuals using the internet in the 12-month period between April 2020 and March 2021 to communicate with public institutions or organizations for private purposes or to benefit from public services was 58.9%. This rate was previously determined as 51.5%.

Among the purposes of using e-Devlet services, obtaining information from websites belonging to public institutions or organizations ranked first with 55.8%. While 32.3% of the individuals reported that they filled in online forms, 27.7% stated that they downloaded/printed official forms.

ONLINE SHOPPING IS EXPANDING

The rate of individuals in the 16-74 age group who ordered or purchased goods or services for private use over the Internet was 44.3% this year. This rate was 36.5% last year.

According to gender, the rate of ordering or purchasing goods or services over the internet was 48.3% for men and 40.3% for women. This rate was 40.2% and 32.7%, respectively, last year.

When individuals who buy or order goods or services over the Internet are analyzed according to the time they buy or order goods or services, it is seen that 32.4% of them shopped in the last 3 months of this year. In the same period of the previous year, the said rate was 23.9%.

MOSTLY CLOTHING, SHOES AND ACCESSORIES WERE PURCHASED

70.7% of individuals who ordered or purchased goods online in the first three months of this year purchased clothing, shoes and accessories. This is followed by deliveries from restaurants, fast food chains and catering companies with 40.8%, food products with 33.4%, cosmetics, beauty and health products with 28.7%, printed books, magazines, newspapers with 27.7%, and cleaning products and personal care materials followed with 27.6%.

While the types of goods ordered or purchased the most over the Internet are clothing, shoes and accessories with 64.1%, deliveries from restaurants, fast food chains and catering companies with 42.7% and food products with 33.4% for men. It was clothing, shoes and accessories with 77.8%, cosmetics, beauty and health products with 40.6%, and deliveries from restaurants, fast food chains and catering companies with 38.8% for women.

MOSTLY “MOVIE OR TV SERIES STREAMING SERVICES” WERE PURCHASED

While the most purchased or subscribed digital content using websites or applications by individuals who purchased or ordered products for private use over the Internet in the first three months of this year, movies or TV series watching or downloading services was 30.6%, the most purchased online service was recorded as transportation service with 14.4%.

While the rate of individuals who ordered or bought products 1-2 times in the first three months of the year for private use over the Internet was 37.2%, the rate of those who bought more than 10 was 17.4%. These rates were 45.6% and 11.2%, respectively, in the same period of the previous year.

Among the reasons for not purchasing/not placing an order for those who were internet users in the first three months of this year and did not purchase goods or services over the website or mobile application in the same period were preferring to buy the product by seeing it on-site, loyalty to the shop where it is sold and habits took the first place with 34.8%. This was followed by the absence of the need to purchase goods or services on the internet in the last three months with 28.8%.
