4 planes passed through Turkish airspace every minute

Last year, on average, a plane passed through Turkish airspace every 15 seconds.

Turkiye, which has become one of the fastest developing countries in the world in this field with the investments made in the civil aviation infrastructure and the decisions implemented, has seen a significant increase in the number of passengers traveling by plane in recent years.

In Turkiye, where only Turkish Airlines (THY) operated scheduled flights to 26 destinations from two centers in 2002, in the past 21 years, 3 domestic airlines have been operating flights to a total of 57 destinations from 7 centres.

On the other hand, while flights were organized to only 60 destinations abroad in 2003, this number reached 343 destinations by the end of last year.

The number of flights, including transit overpasses, in Turkish airspace last year increased by 14.9% compared to the previous year, from 1 million 885 thousand 525 to 2 million 167 thousand 19. During the period in question, an aircraft passed through the skies of Turkiye approximately every 15 seconds.

As of the end of last year, 67% of the planes landing and taking off from airports were commercial flights. The number of commercial flights increased by 16.3% compared to the previous year, reaching 1 million 354 thousand 710.

Transit overpass increased by 22.3%

Last year, domestic aircraft traffic increased by 10.5% compared to 2022, reaching 868 thousand 467. International flight traffic increased by 15.8% and was recorded as 813 thousand 328.

The number of transit overpasses through Turkish airspace increased by 22.3% and reached 485 thousand 224 in 2023. Thus, Turkish airspace hosted a total of 2 million 167 thousand 19 flights.
