34% of Turkiye’s hazelnut exports were made from Trabzon

34% of Turkiye’s hazelnut exports in the 2022-2023 season, which was 299 thousand 462 tons, were carried out by companies in Trabzon.

In the written statement made by the Eastern Black Sea Exporters’ Association (DKIB), it was stated that in the season that started on September 1, 2022 and ended on August 31, 2023, Turkiye provided $1 billion 798 million 876 thousand in revenue in return for 299 thousand 462 tons of hazelnut exports.

In the statement, it was stated that companies from Trabzon realized 34% of the total hazelnut export with 101 thousand 858 tons, corresponding to $615 million 648 thousand 471. It was reported that hazelnuts were sold to 60 different countries from the city, with Italy, Germany, Poland, France and Brazil in the first place.

Sebahattin Arslanturk, Vice Chairman of DKIB Hazelnut and Hazelnut Products Sector Committee, whose evaluations are included in the statement, noted that high inflationary pressures experienced on a global scale, especially in European markets, led to shrinkage in demand, and that exporting nearly 300 thousand tons of hazelnuts is an important achievement of the exporter.

Arslanturk wished the 2023-2024 season to be fruitful and stated that the producer’s control is to ensure that the hazelnut price continues to rise steadily in the new harvest period, and that the producer should act very cautiously to sell the hazelnuts at regular intervals instead of immediately bringing them to the market.

Arslanturk demanded that the ministries put their incentive policies on the axis of efficiency and quality-oriented practices so that Turkiye can preserve the value of hazelnut in the future. He emphasized that at a time when new support models are being implemented for quality and sustainable production, Turkey should increase its support to producers that make efficient and quality production in parallel with these practices.

Pointing out the importance of hazelnut for the Black Sea Region, Arslanturk stated that the quality of hazelnut production will increase, and this situation will positively affect exports, by encouraging the production of high quality hazelnuts, developing support policies for production that will increase the yield per unit through garden maintenance and renewal, and supporting the producer to focus on machine agriculture in suitable lands.
