51.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas will enter the system in Turkiye in 2023

The total amount entering Turkiye’s natural gas system decreased by 8% compared to the previous year in 2023, reaching 51 billion 477 million 297 thousand cubic meters.

Petroleum Transportation Inc. with Pipelines According to (BOTAS) data, there was a decrease in natural gas demand last year due to the effect of higher than expected air temperatures. During this period, the amount of natural gas supplied to the system in Turkiye was recorded as 51 billion 477 million 297 thousand cubic meters.

This figure was calculated as 56 billion 11 million cubic meters in 2022, and the total consumption amount was 53 billion 521 million cubic meters. Thus, there was an 8% decrease in the amount of natural gas entering the system last year compared to the previous year.

In Turkiye, which also exports natural gas, there can be a difference of nearly 5% between total consumption and input amount.

Gas input is highest in January and least in June

The month with the highest natural gas inflow to Turkiye last year was the mine, with approximately 6 billion 278 million cubic meters. The lowest natural gas inflow was in June with 2 billion 342 million cubic meters.

“We do not foresee any problems for this year”

On the other hand, natural gas investments in Turkiye continue unabated. In his statement on December 28, 2023, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar stated that the country’s natural gas infrastructure has been strengthened with the investments made in recent years and has reached a level that can supply 50% of its gas needs as liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Reminding that there were problems in the supply of natural gas to the industry in previous years, Bayraktar stated that this year the natural gas tanks were completely full.

Bayraktar said, “We do not foresee any problems for this year. Hopefully, we will get through this process without any problems. With our own gas coming into use more intensively in the next period, we will remove this issue from our agenda in any way.”

Black Sea gas is in operation

Turkiye’s Black Sea gas also constitutes one of the important milestones in the country’s energy sector.

Black Sea gas was put into operation at a ceremony held at Filyos Port in Zonguldak on April 20, 2023, with the participation of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Thus, the first shipment was made from the natural gas field in the Black Sea. The first excess production of Black Sea gas, which is available for household use, was determined as 10 million cubic meters, and the second phase was determined as 40 million cubic meters.
