In Turkey, ₺20 billion 249 million were spent each year on R&D activities from the central government budget. For this year, ₺26 billion 307 million initial appropriation has been allocated.
The Turkish Statistical Institute has published the bulletin “Allowance and Expenditures from the Central Government Budget for Research and Development Activities-2022”.
According to the calculations made over the central government budget, ₺20 billion 249 million were spent on R&D last year. Thus, the ratio of expenditures made for R&D activities from the central government budget to the gross domestic product was 0.28%.
According to the estimated results based on the initial budget appropriations, ₺26 billion 307 million was allocated from the central government budget for R&D this year.
The sum of tax deductions and exemptions for R&D activities was ₺13 billion 416 million last year.
Most funding was given to universities
When the expenditures made from the central government budget for R&D are classified according to socio-economic targets, the highest expenditure for 2021 was made to universities for general knowledge development with 48.3%. This was followed by defense with 15.6%, industrial production and technology with 10.3%, general knowledge development R&D (funded from other sources) with 10%, and transportation, telecommunications and other infrastructures with 4.8%.
According to the estimation made for this year, based on the initial budget appropriations, it was estimated that the highest appropriation, with 38.4%, would be allocated to universities for general knowledge development. The defense ranked second among socio-economic targets with 36.4%. These targets were followed by industrial production and technology (8.4%), general knowledge development (7%) and education (3.2%).
