Turkiye: $21.29 billion of exports from the agriculture, food and beverage sector in 10 months

According to the Digital Data Panel of the Federation of Turkish Food and Beverage Industry Associations (TGDF), which was prepared based on the Foreign Trade Data of the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), in 10 months this year, the agriculture, food and beverage sector exported $21.29 billion, an increase of 5.64%, and imported $18.26 billion, an increase of 7.43% compared to the same period last year.

According to the statement made by TGDF, as of October 2023, on a monthly basis, exports increased by 14.49% compared to the same period last year, reaching $2.57 billion, while imports decreased by 7.73% compared to the same period last year, reaching $1.41 billion. While wheat imports increased by 14.3% in October, soybean imports decreased by 18.2%.

Cattle imports increased by 961% in October. While a total of $859.6 million of cattle imports were made in the 10 months of the year, the amount of cattle imports in October alone was $154.1 million. The largest share in cattle imports in October belonged to Brazil with $67.3 million, followed by Uruguay with $34.7 million and the Czech Republic with $11.5 million.

The foreign trade balance in the agriculture, food and beverage sector gave a surplus of $3.03 billion in the January-October period. Last year, in the January-October period, the foreign trade balance had a surplus of $3.15 billion. As of October, the foreign trade balance gave a surplus of $1.16 billion on a monthly basis.

According to TGDF Digital Data Panel prepared based on TURKSTAT Foreign Trade Data, in 10 months this year, the agriculture, food and beverage sector exported $21.29 billion, an increase of 5.64%, and imported $18.26 billion, an increase of 7.43% compared to the same period last year.

Flour, refined sunflower oil and hazelnut kernels came to the fore in exports

In the 10 months of the year, the unit export value decreased by 4.6% compared to the same period last year, reaching 1,145 dollars/ton. The import unit value decreased by 9.4% compared to the same period last year and reached 630 dollars/ton.

Among the prominent products in exports in the 10 months of 2023, flour took the first place with $1 billion 237.6 million. This product was followed by refined sunflower oil with $800.8 million and hazelnut kernels with $728.2 million. These products constituted approximately 12.9% of total exports as of January-October period.

In the same period, the most imported product was wheat with $2 billion 989.9 million. Wheat was followed by soybeans with $1 billion 521 million and crude sunflower oil with $1 billion 173.7 million. These 3 products constituted 31.1% of total imports as of January-October period.

Most exports were made to Iraq

When foreign trade data was evaluated on a country basis in the 10 months of this year, the country with the most exports was Iraq with $2 billion 564 million. After Iraq, the highest exports were made to Germany with $1 billion 524 million, Russia with $1 billion 424 million, the USA with $1 billion 295 million and Italy with $976 million.

In the same period, the highest import on a country basis was from Russia with $4 billion 365 million. This country was followed by Ukraine with $2 billion 526 million, Brazil with $1 billion 698 million, the USA with $832 million and Malaysia with $829 million.

Turkiye exported flour, frozen chicken meat, red lentils to Iraq, one of the countries to which it exported the most in the 10 months of the year; Packaged hazelnuts, hazelnut kernels, cherries to Germany; exported trout, peaches and tangerines to Russia.

In the same period, Turkiye imported wheat, corn, and raw sunflower from Russia, from which it imported the most; imported wheat, crude sunflower oil, soybeans from Ukraine, and soybeans, cattle and coffee from Brazil.
