Rize Tea Exports Surge 72% in First Quarter: Reaches $5 Million

Tea exports from Rize in the first quarter of the year increased by 72% compared to the same period last year, reaching $5 million 109 thousand 641.

According to the information compiled from the data of the Eastern Black Sea Exporters Association (DKIB), 1315 tons of tea were exported to 17 countries in the January-March period from Rize, which has a name for itself in world tea production and exports. A profit of $5 million 109 thousand 641 was made from the export in question.

In the same period last year, $2 million 974 thousand 895 of income was obtained from 954 tons of tea exports from Rize. In the January-March period, exports increased by 38% in quantity and 72% in value compared to the same period last year.

EXPORTS TO BELGIUM INCREASED BY 72%

Belgium, the United States of America and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus were the countries with the most exports.

During this period, 889 tons of tea were exported from Rize to Belgium, earning $3 million 815 thousand 186. In the same period last year, 654 tons of tea worth $2 million 605 thousand 955 were exported to the country. Thus, tea exports to Belgium in the first quarter of the year increased by 38% in quantity and 72% in value compared to the first quarter of last year.

This country was followed by the United States of America with $484 thousand 179 and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus with $209 thousand 830.

“60% OF TEA EXPORT IS FROM RIZE”

DKIB Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors Saban Turgut told the AA correspondent that $8 million 555 thousand 356 worth of tea was exported from Turkiye in the first quarter of the year.

Kalyoncu emphasized that 60% of the country’s tea exports are from Rize. “Tea exports from Rize this period increased by 72%, reaching $5 million 109 thousand 641. We started 2024 with a very good export increase. In this context, we believe that our sector exports will increase exponentially in the coming days.”

Turgut pointed out that his expectations from tea exports were always high and made the following evaluation:

“As the brand awareness of Turkish tea, which is among the most important agricultural products of our country and the green gold of the region, is increasing day by day, its exports have entered an increasing trend. Especially as DKIB, we believe that we will make a significant contribution to exports with the promotional activities we will carry out within the scope of our Turquality projects for the next 4 years.”

Pointing out that they also attach importance to the production stages of Turkish tea, Turgut noted that it is important to address the production stages of tea and increase productivity by renewing the gardens.
