Approximately 1.5 million planes used Istanbul Airport in 4.5 years

According to the information compiled by the AA correspondent, the first flight to Istanbul Airport, the construction of which began in 2015, took place with the landing of the Presidential “TC-ANK” plane on the first runway, which is 3 thousand 750 meters long and 60 meters wide, on 21 June 2018. The airport then officially opened on 29 October 2018 and started to serve.

Istanbul Airport, which was used by 1 million 447 thousand 716 aircraft in the intervening period, served approximately 210 million passengers.

According to the statistics realized after the scheduled flights started on October 29, 2018, 775 planes landed and took off at Istanbul Airport, which was used by 95,205 passengers in 2018.

Rapidly increasing the number of passengers and aircraft, Istanbul Airport hosted 51 million 864 thousand 499 passengers in 2019, when Ataturk Airport continued to serve in the first quarter.

Istanbul Airport, which was used by 327 thousand 118 aircraft in this period, was adversely affected like all airports in the world in the years when the Covid-19 epidemic showed its effects.

While 23 million 330 thousand 411 passengers used Istanbul Airport in 2020, 185 thousand 642 aircraft were served in this period. The airport was used by 36 million 988 thousand 67 passengers and 280 thousand 108 aircraft in 2021.

With the epidemic losing its effect and the gradual start of global flights, Istanbul Airport started to increase the number of passengers rapidly.

Last year, 425 thousand 890 aircraft landed and took off at Istanbul Airport, which was used by 64 million 289 thousand 107 passengers.

The airport, which started this year fast, served 33 million 265 thousand passengers and 228 thousand 215 aircraft in the January-June period.

Turkiye and Europe’s flight records were broken

Maintaining its first place among European airports in the reports of the European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation (Eurocontrol) with its daily flight traffic, Istanbul Airport broke the flight records in the civil aviation history of Turkiye and Europe in 2023.

According to Eurocontrol reports, Istanbul Airport reached the airport with the highest daily flights in the history of Europe with 1684 flights on 11 June.

Ataturk Airport, which was closed to civil flights, reached the highest number of flights and passengers on 18 September 2016 by hosting 230 thousand passengers with 1500 daily flights.

Istanbul Airport, on the other hand, served 244,709 passengers on 1548 flights on Sunday, April 23, reaching the highest daily passenger record in Turkish civil aviation.
