Turkiye’s anchovy exports increased by 23%

Turkiye’s anchovy exports in 2023 increased by 23% compared to the previous year, reaching $13 million 745 thousand.

According to the compilation of data from the Eastern Black Sea Exporters Association (DKIB), anchovies were exported to 26 countries last year from Turkiye, which has a name for itself in aquatic products.

Anchovy exports, which were recorded as $11 million 137 thousand 463 in the January-December 2022 period, increased by 23% last year and reached $13 million 745 thousand 45.

In terms of quantity, exports, which were 2 thousand 102 tons in 2022, reached 3 thousand 54 tons in 2023, increasing by 45% compared to the previous year.

Although the yield was not at the expected level due to climatic factors, the highest demand for anchovies, which closed last year with an increase in exports, came from France, Belgium and Germany.

This year, anchovies worth $4 million 831 thousand 138 were exported from Turkiye to France, $4 million 86 thousand 121 to Belgium, and $1 million 349 thousand 308 to Germany.

Unlike the same period in 2022, anchovies were also sold to Sweden, Uzbekistan, Iraq, Moldova, Malaysia and Somalia last year.

“We are also working to increase market diversity”

DKIB Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors Ahmet Hamdi Gurdogan said that anchovy is an important export product in the aquaculture industry.

Pointing out that anchovy exports closed last year with a 23% increase, Gurdogan said, “Although the yield was not at the expected level due to climatic factors, there was an increase in our exports. We believe that our exports will reach much better levels in the coming days, depending on the increase in the amount of caught products depending on the weather. We always have high expectations from anchovy exports.”

Gurdogan also drew attention to the importance of sustainability in anchovy exports and continued his words as follows:

“It is important to implement practices that will ensure the abundance of anchovies and reach larger sizes by imposing a strictly controlled hunting ban for one season. By fulfilling this practice, it will contribute to both the abundance of the product and the sustainability of the sector’s exports. This is among the most important demands of the sector representatives.”

Ahmet Hamdi Gurdogan added that they are working to increase market diversity in exports.
