Trade Minister Mehmet Mus met with the ambassadors of EU member states in Ankara at a work breakfast. Minister Mus said that the trade volume between Turkey and the EU, which exceeded $140 billion last year, reached $87 billion in the first 6 months of this year with an increase of 39.3% compared to the same period of the previous year. Mus stated that there are ample opportunities for further commercial relations. During the meeting, issues such as Turkey-EU economic and commercial relations, the current functioning and updating process of the Customs Union, EU safeguards in steel products, the European Green Deal and carbon regulation at the border were discussed.
Stating that Turkey’s strategic goal is full membership in the EU, Mus said that technical studies will be started immediately with the EU so that the EU’s potential carbon regulation at the border does not hinder the free movement of goods in trade between Turkey and the EU. Minister Mus stated that it is disappointing for Turkey that the EU’s protection measures on steel products have been extended for another three years.
