Minister of Agriculture: Turkey’s historical record in dry bean production was broken in 2020

Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Bekir Pakdemirli stated that the efforts and support for dry bean production yielded results and that the historical record of the Republic was broken in 2020.

According to the statement made by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Pakdemirli made a video call with Veysi Isler, a farmer harvesting dry beans in Bitlis, which was in the 50th rank in 2002 by producing 12% of the bean production in Turkey, and rose to the 3rd rank last year.

Mehmet Hasdemir, General Manager of Herbal Production in Bitlis, Rifat Celik, Bitlis Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry, and Necat Demirden, President of Ahlat Chamber of Agriculture, accompanied the meeting.

Stating that Bitlis has an important role in the production of more than 300 thousand tons throughout Turkey this year, Pakdemirli said, “We came to Bitlis, which produced only 655 tons of dry beans in 2002, and Bitlis, which produced more than 32 thousand tons last year. There has been an increase of about 60 times in the last 19 years. Hopefully, we will be producing 40 thousand tons in 2021. When we look at the last 3 years, there is an increase of more than 100%.”

Emphasizing that the efforts and support for dry bean production yielded results, Pakdemirli said:

“Turkey’s dry bean production has increased exponentially over the years. In 2020, the record in the history of the Republic was broken in production. I thank all producers, farmers and stakeholders for their success. This success is the success of our producer. Thank God Bitlis has seen abundance this year. God bless you all.”

Farmer Isler from Bitlis stated that they are satisfied with the production and that they will increase production with the support of the Ministry.
