Leading U.S. Companies Join Security Consortium to Address Risks of Artificial Intelligence

The U.S. Department of Commerce announced the establishment of a new security consortium with the participation of over 200 companies and organizations, including OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Meta, Apple, Amazon, and Nvidia. The consortium aims to support the development and widespread adoption of secure artificial intelligence (AI).

In a statement, the department revealed that the Biden administration has established the first consortium focusing on AI security, operating under the U.S. Artificial Intelligence Security Institute.

The consortium, formed under the U.S. Artificial Intelligence Security Institute, aims to develop and promote safe and reliable AI. The statement highlighted that the consortium will bring together AI creators, users, academics, government and industry researchers, and non-governmental organizations.

More than 200 companies and organizations are reported to be part of the consortium, comprising some of the country’s largest corporations, innovative startups, civil society organizations, academic teams, and professionals deeply involved in the current use of AI.

The statement emphasized that the companies and organizations in the consortium are at the forefront of creating and using the most advanced AI systems and hardware. They are considered key players in building the fundamental understanding of how AI can and will transform society.

The consortium is expected to contribute to actions such as capacity assessment, risk management, and the development of guidelines for safety and security.

U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo stated in her comments on the matter that the U.S. government plays a crucial role in determining the necessary standards and developing tools to reduce risks and leverage the potential of AI. Raimondo added that the U.S. Artificial Intelligence Security Institute Consortium was established to help achieve the goals of setting security standards and preserving the innovation ecosystem.

Among the companies joining the consortium are OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Meta, Apple, Amazon, Nvidia, Anthropic, Palantir, Intel, IBM, Cisco Systems, Qualcomm, JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citigroup, Mastercard, and Visa.
