The leather and leather products sector realized an export of $1.7 billion in the 10 months of the year.

“Our sub-sector to which we exported the most in October was the footwear industry with $99.9 million”

Güven Karaca, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Istanbul Leather and Leather Products Exporters’ Association (IDMIB), stated that they achieved the export value they realized in the whole of 2021 in the 10 months of this year, “With another record in the footwear industry, we achieved an increase of 19.3% compared to the same period of the previous year and reached the export level of $1 billion. In the saddlery product group, we achieved an export of $251 million with an increase of 31.6%. In the same period, exports of $238 million were achieved in the semi-finished and finished leather and processed fur sub-product group with an increase of 10.1%, and exports of $194 million were achieved in the leather and fur clothing group with an increase of 11.4%.”

Evaluating the export figures in sub-product groups, Karaca said:

“Our sub-sector, to which we exported the most in October, was the footwear industry with $99.9 million. We achieved an increase of 15.4% in the shoe industry compared to the same month of the previous year, and we reached the record level of October of all time. In October, exports in leather and fur clothing product group increased by 9% to $26 million, in saddlery product group increased by 8% to $24.7 million, semi-processed and finished leather and processed fur product group amounted to $17 million with a decrease of 33%. In line with these figures, we reached the highest October values in our exports of leather and leather products in general, shoes and saddlery product groups.

Another important point is that our export increase on value basis was 6.1% and our export increase on quantity basis was 2.5% last month in leather and leather products. The fact that the increase in exports on the basis of value is higher than the increase in exports on the basis of quantity is also an indicator of the increase in the production of value-added products in our sector.”
