The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure stated that Marmaray, the main backbone of Istanbul transportation, renewed its record by carrying 580 thousand 560 passengers in one day. In the statement made by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, it was said, “A total of 670 million passengers have traveled on Marmaray since the day it was opened.”
According to the statement made by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, the “Project of the Century Marmaray” maintains its value in Turkey and in the world, with its ability to maintain Istanbul’s urban life in a healthy way, offering a modern city life to the residents and modern transportation service.
Marmaray, which offers uninterrupted transportation from Gebze to Halkali with the improvement of the Gebze-Halkali Suburban Line and the railway strait tube crossing, connects the Asian and European continents in just 4 minutes. With the completion of the second phase in March 2019, the 76.6-kilometer line, with 43 stations, gives the mega-city a sigh of relief.
Marmaray, which has the world’s deepest immersed tube tunnel used by rail systems with a depth of 60.46 meters, provides connections to YHT and mainline trains at Gebze, Pendik, Bostanci, Sogutlucesme, Bakirkoy and Halkali stations, and to metro, metrobus, city line ferries and trams at stations with high passenger density such as Yenikapi, Sirkeci, Ayrilik Cesmesi, Uskudar and Sogutlucesme.
51% OF PASSENGERS ARE FROM THE EUROPEAN SIDE
Marmaray, which was used by 567 thousand 169 passengers on November 5 last year, reached the highest number of passengers carried in one day. This record was renewed with 580 thousand 560 passengers on 24 March.
It is aimed to carry 1 million passengers per day on Marmaray, which makes 292 trips during the day.
Marmaray, operated by TCDD Tasimacilik AS, has traveled 670 million passengers since its opening. It has been determined that the stations with the highest passenger density on Marmaray are Yenikapi, Uskudar, Sirkeci, Sogutlucesme, Ayrilik Cesmesi and Bakirkoy. These stations hosted 52% of the passengers carried. It was determined that 51% of the passengers departed from the European Side and 49% from the Anatolian Side.
