Turkiye: The route is being determined in 5G authorization studies

Turkiye has completed its authorization studies for 5G and determined the road map for producing new generation mobile technologies in electronic communications.

According to the information compiled by the AA correspondent from the 12th Development Plan (2024-2028), it is aimed to increase domestic added value in information and communication technologies, to ensure efficiency and competitiveness in the economy through the effective and widespread use of these technologies, and to reduce Turkiye’s external dependence on technology in the medium term.

In this context, the competitiveness and sustainability of electronic communication infrastructures operated by the public and private sectors will be ensured in the light of technological developments.

Publicly owned electronic communications companies will be reconsidered, taking into account new service and business models in order to ensure competition in the sector and a holistic management of the infrastructure. Arrangements will be made to strengthen competition in cooperation with stakeholders.

Fixed and mobile broadband infrastructures that offer high-speed, high-quality, secure and affordable access will be expanded. In order to strengthen competition in the electronic communications sector, the permit and right of way for infrastructure installation, common use of infrastructure and facility sharing processes will be improved. Public burdens on electronic communications operators will be eased.

The localization rate will be monitored on the basis of technology

A sectoral data infrastructure will be created, including the work areas, workforce qualifications and maturity levels of domestic companies operating in the information and communication technologies sector.

Competition in domestic production will be strengthened, ensuring that domestic products have the quality of global equivalent products and competitive prices.

Domestic production and R&D supports will be provided in the electronic communications sector, covering all processes from research to commercialization in accordance with sectoral needs, especially new generation mobile technologies.

It will be ensured that the locality rate criteria in authorizations in the electronic communications sector are determined in a way that will increase the local added value, and the locality rate of operator infrastructures on a technology basis will be monitored.

Effective management of the transition to new generation mobile communication technologies will be ensured. During the transition to new generation mobile services, old generation mobile communication infrastructures and the frequencies used will be reviewed taking into account the needs of the public and private sectors.

International work on the path to 6G

With the experience gained in previous authorizations, authorization studies for 5G will be completed by considering the installation of domestic communication infrastructures within the framework of international developments in accordance with user needs and sectoral developments, and national and international studies for 6G will be followed.

Activities will be carried out to provide broadband services provided via satellites, especially low orbit satellites, throughout the country within the framework of the regulations to be made, and studies for localization will be initiated.
