Turkiye’s Natural Gas Production to Reach 13 Billion Cubic Meters

It is predicted that Turkiye will reach an annual natural gas production amount of 13 billion cubic meters by 2050, positioning itself among the main energy suppliers in Western markets, the Middle East and Russia.

Turkiye’s natural gas production in the Black Sea is expected to increase year by year.

While production in the Sakarya gas field in the Black Sea is estimated to reach 1.6 billion cubic meters this year, the highest production in the first phase of the field is predicted to be 3.5 billion cubic meters.

It is calculated that with the completion of the development in the second phase of the Sakarya gas field, the annual production will reach a total of 11 billion cubic meters.

The report pointed out the importance of the developments in the Sakarya gas field and said, “Turkiye is expected to reach 13 billion cubic meters of natural gas production by 2050.”

It was pointed out that the production amount could increase with the expansion of the Sakarya field and possible discoveries in the South Akcakoca Sub-Basin.

Turkiye has taken steps to become a regional center

The report states that Turkiye has taken steps to become a strategic and key country among the main energy suppliers in the Western markets, the Middle East and Russia, with its efforts. “Turkiye has begun to move towards a regional hub role thanks to its pipeline connection to the rest of Europe and loading facilities at three regasification terminals.”

The report pointed out that Russia and Turkiye have been planning to establish an international gas center in Turkiye since 2022 and that Russian gas will be significantly involved in this initiative.

The report stated that Turkiye imported 54 billion cubic meters of natural gas in 2022, and 72% of this amount was imported through pipelines.

In the report, which emphasizes Turkiye’s natural gas resource diversity, it is stated that natural gas is received through pipelines from Russia, Iran and Azerbaijan, and that there are 5 liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals with a total annual capacity of 27 million tons.

The report estimates that net natural gas imports will reach 55 billion cubic meters annually by 2050, and noted the following:

“It is estimated that Turkiye’s LNG imports will experience a marginal decline, falling to 8 million tons annually in 2050. This expectation stems from the efficient supply of pipeline gas from various countries such as Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran, and the diversification of the sources of the Turkish market. Turkiye experienced a major development in natural gas investments in 2022. Especially due to the impact of the first phase of the Sakarya project in the Black Sea, upstream gas investment in 2022 increased by $1.6 billion and was recorded as $2.3 billion. In the long term, Turkiye is expected to reach 13 billion cubic meters of gas production with an upstream capital investment of $8.7 billion.”
