Industry and Technology Minister announced the target for 2023: 500 thousand software developers

Speaking at the Turkey Open Source Platform 42 Schools Opening Ceremony, Industry and Technology Minister Mustafa Varank said, “We aim to have at least 500 thousand software developers in 2023.”

Industry and Technology Minister Mustafa Varank spoke at the Opening Ceremony of 42 Schools of Turkey Open Source Platform held in Istanbul. Deputy Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacir, TUBITAK President Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal, Havelsan General Manager Dr. Mehmet Akif Nacar and Aselsan General Manager Haluk Gorgun also attended the ceremony. In his speech, Minister Varank said, “We have reached an important stage in the platform we created to support the open source software development culture and ecosystem in Turkey. Today, we are officially opening the software schools we have established within the platform. With the venue sponsorship of Evyap, we offer this school to our youth with a total of 400 computers in Vadistanbul. Our other school will start its activities in Kocaeli as of September 27. Of course, we aim to expand these schools to other provinces in the coming period.”

“OUR GOAL IS TO QUICKLY TRAIN SOFTWARE THAT CAN PARTICIPATE IN THE EMPLOYMENT MARKET”

Stating that education is completely free in these schools, which will be open 24/7, Minister Varank said, “Students will learn software from each other through projects and gamification without an instructor. We cooperated with the French Ekol 42 brand to achieve international standards in these schools. Ekol 42, an international brand with 36 campuses in 23 countries, is considered among the best coding schools in the world. See, graduates of the equivalents of these educational institutions in the world are employed in the best companies. In fact, there are many young people who find a job and start working in the second year of education. Our goal here, too, will be to train software developers who can quickly join the employment market, rather than just raising software developers.”

“WE WILL CREATE A DYNAMIC ECOSYSTEM THAT RESPONSES EVERYONE’S NEEDS”

Minister Varank said, “The Turkish Open Source Platform will not leave our young people alone in this sense. They will support part-time work during training and full-time work after education. Our young people will have the opportunity to work with valuable companies of the sector in real projects. Again, our platform member companies will be able to meet, follow and employ students during their education. Thus, we will create a dynamic ecosystem that meets the needs of everyone.”

“IN 2023, WE AIM TO HAVE AT LEAST 500 THOUSAND SOFTWARE DEVELOPERS IN OUR COUNTRY”

Stating that the Turkish Open Source Platform and 42 software schools will have important duties in the number of software developers, Minister Varank said, “As you know, the prerequisite for being able to say I am in the new order of the digital age is to have a strong software developer base. We are also developing our army of software developers on this path we set out to make our country a producer of critical technologies, not a market. We have already stated this need in the Industry and Technology Strategy, which we have prepared with the vision of the National Technology Move. In 2023, we aim to have at least 500 thousand software developers in our country. Here, Turkey Open Source Platform and 42 software schools will perform very important tasks at this point. We will increase the quality and quantity of our software developers thanks to this platform and such innovative schools that bring all relevant stakeholders together. Thus, we will reduce foreign dependency and reduce costs in software used by both the public and private sectors. More importantly, we will eliminate possible cyber security problems.”
