Industry plays a leading role in Istanbul’s exports

The leading role in the export of companies operating in Istanbul is played by the industrial sector.

According to the information compiled by AA correspondent from the data of the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TIM), Turkiye’s exports increased by 14.4% in May compared to the same period of the previous year and rose to $21 billion 651 million.

Exports of companies from Istanbul increased by 9% last month compared to the same period of 2022 and reached $8 billion 109 million.

Istanbul was followed by Kocaeli with $1 billion 437 million, Bursa with $1 billion 435 million, Izmir with $1 billion 299 million and Ankara with $1 billion 63 million.

In this period, Istanbul took the lead in the increase in exports on the basis of provinces with $667 million 106 thousand. Ankara was followed by Ankara with $288 million 599 thousand, Izmir with $256 million 929 thousand, Bursa with $256 million 869 thousand and Sakarya with $148 million 313 thousand.

Sakarya exported $501 million 403 thousand in May.

$6 billion 906 million of $8 billion 109 million of exports realized by Istanbul in this period consisted of foreign sales made by the industrial sector.

Istanbul’s industrial exports increased by 7.1% in May compared to the same period of the previous year. Istanbul’s industrial exports accounted for 44.8% of Turkiye’s total exports.

The top 8 sectors with the highest export in Istanbul are in the industrial group

The largest export sectors in Istanbul were followed by chemicals and products with $1 billion 396 million, ready-made clothing and apparel with $1 billion 146 million, automotive industry with $733 million 615 thousand, and electricity and electronics with $681 million 86 thousand, steel with $604 million 183 thousand, ferrous and non-ferrous metals with $579 million 77 thousand, jewelery with $412 million 143 thousand, textile and raw materials with $353 million 272 thousand.

14 provinces exceeded $100 million in industrial exports

After Istanbul, the province with the highest industrial exports in May was Kocaeli with $1 billion 380 million.

While Bursa ranked third with $1 billion 307 million, Izmir realized $904 million 995 thousand, Ankara $712 million 414 thousand, Gaziantep $542 million 789 thousand, Sakarya $490 million 165 thousand, Manisa $394 million 169 thousand, Denizli $309 million 458 thousand, Kayseri $185 million 794 thousand of industrial exports.

In the said period, $242 million 546 thousand from Konya, $173 million 873 thousand from Adana, $152 million 478 thousand from Tekirdag and $138 million 568 thousand from Hatay were made.

Companies operating in Istanbul made the highest export sales to Germany with $638 million 250 thousand. Germany was followed by the USA with $486 million 577 thousand, the Russian Federation with $401 million 190 thousand, the United Kingdom with $397 million 102 thousand, and Italy with $360 million 263 thousand.
