In 2020 more than 23 thousand electric and hybrid cars sold in Turkey

Although the share of hybrid and electric car sales in the Turkish automobile market is still low, sales of electric and hybrid cars increased last year to 23,116.

According to the data compiled by the AA correspondent from the Automotive Distributors’ Association (ODD), the total market for automobiles and light commercial vehicles in Turkey grew by 61.3% in 2020 compared to the previous year, reaching 772,788.

Looking at the cars alone, sales increased by 57.5% in 2020 compared to the previous year, reaching 610,109. The light commercial vehicle market also grew by 77.2% reaching 162 thousand 679 units.

Gasoline-powered cars had the biggest share

As of the end of 2020, gasoline-powered car sales have a share of 52.4% with 319 thousand 489 units in the Turkish automobile market by engine type.

Diesel car sales had a share of 39.5% with 240 thousand 819 units, while the share of autogas car sales was 4.4% with 26 thousand 685 units.

Gasoline-powered car sales increased 106.4%, autogas car sales increased 44%, and diesel car sales 19.4%compared to 2019.

The increasing trend in electric and hybrid vehicle sales continues

In 2019, 12,6 hybrid and 222 electric cars were sold in the Turkish automobile market. At the end of 2020, 22,272 hybrid and 844 electric cars were sold. Thus, a total of 23,116 electric and hybrid cars were sold last year.

The share of electric and hybrid cars also increased from 3.2% to 3.8%.

In the period in question, electric car sales increased by 280.2%, and hybrid car sales increased by 85.5%.

2020 market data pointed out that the upward trend in electric and hybrid vehicle sales continues, albeit at low levels.

There are 8 million electric vehicles in the world as of the end of 2019

Meanwhile, according to the report of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), there are 8 million electric vehicles in the world as of the end of 2019. The number of electric vehicles worldwide is expected to reach 1 billion 100 million by 2050.

According to the report, which points out that effective and sustainable energy policies are widespread throughout the world, fossil resources will be gradually abandoned in order to create low-carbon economies by 2050.
