DS Automobiles is able to offer its customers an enhanced driving experience, thanks to the software knowledge of DS Performance and its numerous wins since 2015.

According to DS Automobiles, the company has broken its own record by winning the 4th race of this year’s ABB FIA Formula E World Championship in Hyderabad, India, with Jean-Eric Vergne.

Participating in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship in order to accelerate not only its physical hardware but also its software, DS Automobiles is able to offer its customers a truly enhanced driving experience, thanks to the software knowledge of DS Performance and its numerous wins since 2015. As important as the drivetrain, software is at the heart of Formula E racing strategy.

DS Automobiles joins Formula E to gain victories and racing experience. The race represents a true open-air laboratory, accelerating innovation in terms of both hardware and software.

Thanks to the requirements of specific road tracks, DS Performance not only develops ultra-high performance powertrains, but also state-of-the-art software that manages the key parameters of a Formula E car. This software is also the source of an important technology transfer for the brand that can be achieved at relatively limited costs compared to the production of physical parts. One of the most important examples in this regard is the regenerative braking system.

To win in Formula E it is essential to be fast and at the same time recover energy during braking as efficiently as possible. To achieve this, engineers in DS Automobiles’ racing division design algorithms that optimize this important element of racing.

Every new development that DS Performance learns about software through Formula E also provides useful information for the R&D teams working on DS Automobiles’ E-TENSE rechargeable hybrid and electric cars.

The new DS 7 E-TENSE 4×4 360 uses energy recovery software directly from Formula E. More efficient than the system used in previous models, this software provides unprecedented braking capabilities by analyzing the pressure applied to the brake pedal and optimizing management.

Mobility is undergoing a real revolution, and software intelligence is at the center of this fundamental change. As a pioneer in electric conversion strategy, DS Automobiles races on Formula E tracks to improve its customers’ everyday driving experience.

The brand, which plans to add 100 percent electric new models to its existing products, which will be launched as of 2024, determines this diversity as its basic strategy.

‘Invaluable for motorsports research and development’

DS Performance Director Eugenio Franzetti, whose views are included in the statement, stated that motorsports is very valuable for research and development activities.

Franzetti said, “DS Automobiles has chosen to participate in the Formula E World Championship to realize the electric transformation of its product line. The experience gained over many seasons has been and still is very useful for the development of road cars of today and tomorrow. An obvious example of this is; It is the energy recovery system during braking that has been studied in Formula E, pushed to its limits, and then transferred to all our E-TENSE road cars.”

Stellantis Software Director Yves Bonnefont noted that energy efficiency makes the difference between cars in Formula E, and this largely depends on the software that manages the regenerative braking, inverter and battery.

“Nowadays, it’s easy to transfer these race-born technologies to road electric vehicles, as there’s no question of cost. It’s a step that is financially transparent and also provides some incredible advances in technology.’
