One of every two electric cars sold in January was Togg in Turkiye

The share of fully electric car sales in the total market in Turkiye was 5.5% in January. Togg’s market share in its category was 45.9%. There was a 401% increase in fully electric car sales.

According to data compiled from the Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association (ODMD), car and light commercial vehicle sales last month increased by 56.6% compared to the same period in 2023, reaching 79 thousand 701.

During this period, automobile sales increased by 71.7% to 64 thousand 41 units, and light commercial vehicle sales increased by 15.1% to 15 thousand 660 units. These figures were recorded as the highest January data of all time.

HYBRID SALES EXCEED DIESEL SALES

In the Turkish automobile market, last month, gasoline cars ranked first with 41 thousand 212 sales, and hybrid cars ranked second with 10 thousand 260 sales.

Diesel car sales were recorded as 8 thousand 55, and autogas car sales were recorded as 541 units. Sales of fully electric cars powered only by electricity amounted to 3 thousand 542.

When vehicles with a system that provides power to the wheels (extended range) by running an electric motor with a gasoline engine generator to charge the battery in the vehicle are included, the electric car sales figure increased to 3 thousand 973. Extended range cars are also included in the “electric” class according to the Customs Tariff Statistics Position (GTIP).

Last month, compared to the same period in 2023, there was a 61.2% increase in gasoline car sales and a 60.6% increase in diesel cars, while autogas car sales decreased by 58.5%.

During this period, hybrid car sales increased by 136.7% and fully electric car sales increased by 401%.

THE SHARE OF FULLY ELECTRIC CARS WAS 5.5%

The share of gasoline cars in sales, which was 68.6% in January last year, decreased to 64.4% in the same period this year. During the said period, the share of diesel cars decreased from 13.5% to 12.6%, and the share of autogas cars decreased from 3.5% to 0.8%.

In the said period, the share of total sales increased from 1.9% to 5.5% for fully electric cars; for hybrids, it increased from 11.6% to 16%. Considering full electric, extended range electric and hybrid, it was seen that 22.2% of the total market consisted of vehicles with electrification.

GERMAN BRANDS FOLLOW TOGG

According to ODMD data, the number of brands selling at least one electric model in Turkiye increased from one in 2012 to 27 in October 2023.

Togg’s rise among electric car brands continued in January. Togg ranked first in the market last month with 1625 units. Thus, one in every two cars sold in the electric car market was Togg.

Togg was followed by Mercedes-Benz with 260 units, BMW with 228 sales, Tesla with 220, and BYD with 155 units.

On the other hand, when looked at on a model basis, Togg T10X was the best-selling model, Tesla Model Y was the second, BMW 5 Series was the third, BYD Atto 3 was the fourth, and Mercedes-Benz EQB was the fifth best-selling model.
