US stock market opens lower, risking to end rally

VIX volatility index rises 2.3% to 15.85

US stocks opened lower Thursday, putting major indices at risk of ending their days-long rally.

The Dow Jones fell 103 points, or 0.29%, to 35,505 at 9.38 a.m. EDT.

The S&P 500 was down 8, or 0.18%, to 4,527 after the index rose for six sessions in a row.

The Nasdaq was flat adding only 2 points, or 0.01%, to 15,123. The tech-heavy index closed lower Wednesday after five consecutive days of increase.

The yield on 10-year US Treasury notes continued to increase. They added 1.6% to climb to 1.662%.

While the dollar index was steady at 93.58, the VIX volatility index, known as the fear index, was up again rising 2.3% to 15.85.

Oil prices were down again shedding more than 1%. International benchmark Brent crude was trading at $84.72, and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate was at $82.47.

Precious metals were mixed with gold rising 0.2% to $1,785 per ounce but silver was off 0.4% to $24.19.

After hitting an all-time high of $67,000 Wednesday, Bitcoin was trading at $65,300 with a 1.2% loss.
