Minister of Transport: Mobile subscriber count reaches 92.2 million

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu stated that the revenues of electronic communication sector operators reached 70.1 billion liras in the last quarter of last year, saying, ‘Total revenue exceeded 224 billion liras in 2023.

Uraloğlu made evaluations regarding the “Turkey Electronic Communication Sector Quarterly Market Data Report” prepared by the Information Technologies and Communication Authority (BTK) in a written statement.

Uraloğlu stated that in the fourth quarter of last year, there were 466 companies authorized by the BTK, 848 licenses, and a total of 8 authorized electronic certificate service providers, saying, “These electronic certificate service providers generated a total of 8.3 million electronic certificates by the end of 2023, including 7.3 million electronic signatures and 964 thousand mobile signatures. Turkey’s communication infrastructure quickly adapted to demands. The investments of all operators increased by approximately 68.6 percent to reach 52.4 billion liras. The mobile subscriber count reached 92.2 million, and mobile subscriber penetration also reached approximately 108 percent.”

Uraloğlu indicated that 84.9 million citizens with mobile subscriptions switched to the 4.5G subscription, which started in 2016, stating that the 4.5G service constitutes 92 percent of total subscribers.

Informing that the number of Machine-to-Machine Communication subscribers reached 9.3 million, growing by 15.4 percent annually, Uraloğlu said, “As of the end of 2023, the total number of transferred mobile numbers exceeded 177.3 million, while the number of transferred mobile numbers reached 10.2 million in 2023. A total of 2 million 609 thousand 377 numbers were transferred from September 10, 2009, when the number portability application started, until December 31, 2023.”

Highlighting that approximately 8.6 percent increase was achieved in 2023, reaching 562 thousand kilometers of fiber infrastructure, Uraloğlu said, “The number of fiber internet subscribers also reached 6.8 million, with a 20 percent increase. Now, we are in a period where we need to dream bigger with our citizens and work to make them come true. We plan to increase our fiber length to 600 thousand kilometers by the end of this year and to 850 thousand kilometers within four years. In addition to providing fast internet access, fiber infrastructure has also increased internet usage among citizens. The average monthly data usage of fixed broadband subscribers was 243 gigabytes in the fourth quarter of 2022, while this figure increased to 260.3 gigabytes in the fourth quarter of 2023. The data usage of mobile subscribers using the 4.5G infrastructure, which was 14.8 gigabytes in the fourth quarter of 2022, reached 17.2 gigabytes.”

“In the last quarter of last year, electronic communication sector operator revenues reached 70.1 billion liras. Total revenue exceeded 224 billion liras in 2023, with a record increase of 72.3 percent compared to the previous year. We see that revenues increased by nearly 80 percent for Türk Telekom and mobile operators. When we examine the investments, the amount of investment made in the sector increased by approximately 85 percent compared to the previous year, reaching around 41.2 billion liras, especially for Türk Telekom and mobile operators. The net sales revenues of other operators, who also work to grow and improve their infrastructure through investments, increased by 53 percent in 2023, reaching 53.6 billion liras. The investment amount made by other operators for infrastructure reached 11.2 billion liras. The total investments of all operators increased by approximately 68.6 percent compared to the previous year, reaching 52.4 billion liras. As of the end of the year, the average monthly usage time on mobile networks increased to 477 minutes, while it reached 100 minutes on fixed networks. When we look at the voice traffic on mobile and fixed networks, approximately 98.6 percent of the total traffic of 321.4 billion minutes, of which about 4.6 billion minutes originated from fixed networks, was initiated on mobile networks.”
