LG research papers on ultra-large organic light emitting diode (OLED) displays and stretchable displays have been recognized as outstanding works at a world-renowned conference of the display industry, the display maker said Sunday.
The company said its research papers on new technologies applied to ultra-large OLED and stretchable displays each won Distinguished Paper awards at the Society for Information Display (SID). The achievements will be announced at the SID Display Week, which will be held from Sunday to Friday in Los Angeles.
A team, led by researcher Shin Hong-jae, introduced technologies applied to the development of ultra-large OLED screens over 80 inches in a paper titled “A Novel Ultra Large Size OLED Display for Premium TVs.”
OLED displays have a technical characteristic that makes it difficult to uniformly display high image quality as the screen grows larger. However, by improving panel and drive technologies, enhancing organic light-emitting device performance and reducing the size of bezels, the research team developed a series of large OLED TV panels of over 80 inches in size.
By applying the team’s Meta Technology, an OLED TV panel significantly increases the maximum brightness of 2,100 nits. A nit is a unit measuring the brightness of a surface or object. The technology also improves energy efficiency by about 22 percent by combining ultra-fine lenses that maximize light emissions of organic materials and luminance enhancement algorithms.
Also, a research team, led by researcher Jung Hae-yoon, was recognized for their research paper “High-Resolution Active-Matrix Micro-LED Stretchable Displays.”
Stretchable displays are touted as the next-generation displays because they can be stretched, folded and twisted into any shape.
In 2022, the research team developed the industry’s first 12-inch stretchable display that stretched up to 20 percent while simultaneously delivering high-resolution images. The research was recognized for dramatically increasing the resolution, pliability and reliability of stretchable displays, being touted as a major step toward commercialization.
“We will further bolster our technology leadership through the development of ultra-large, ultra-high definition displays and innovative form factors that deliver transformative customer value,” Yoon Soo-young, chief technology officer of LG Display, said.
