Energy import bill increased by 124% year-on-year in May

The amount paid by Turkiye for energy imports increased by 124% in May compared to the same month of the previous year and rose to $6 billion 942 million 499 thousand.

According to the temporary foreign trade statistics created by the Turkish Statistical Institute and the Ministry of Trade, Turkiye’s imports in May increased by 43.5% compared to the same month of the previous year and reached $29 billion 588 million.

$6 billion 942 million 499 thousand of this amount was composed of “mineral fuels, mineral oils and products obtained from their distillation, bituminous materials, mineral waxes”, summarized as energy imports.

Import bill increased as energy prices rose

In May of last year, this figure was recorded as $3 billion 94 million 519 thousand. In the said period, the import bill in the country increased due to the revival in economic activities, the increase in industrial production and the rise in energy prices in global markets.

On the other hand, crude oil imports increased by 1.5% in May compared to the same month of the previous year and reached 2 million 971 thousand 193 tons.
