Eastern Black Sea Exporters Union (DKIB) Vice Chairman of the Board Ahmet Hamdi Gurdogan said that tea was sold to 98 countries, autonomous and free zones in 4 months from the country.

Gurdogan stated that in January-April 2023, $11 million 365 thousand 591 were obtained from 2 thousand 323 tons of tea exports.

Stating that $8 million 192 thousand 169 were earned from the export of 2 thousand 458 tons of tea from the country in the same period of last year, Gurdogan continued his words as follows:

“Our tea exports increased by 39% in value compared to the same period of the previous year. Belgium, the USA and the United Kingdom became the 3 countries with the highest exports. This period, $4 million 765 thousand 324 of tea were exported to Belgium, $1 million 934 thousand 866 to the USA and $953 thousand 309 to the United Kingdom.”

Noting that the variety of countries increased in parallel with the increase in exports, Gurdogan stated that tea was also sold to Slovakia, Mexico, Spain, Italy, Gabon, Panama, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, Portugal, Angola, Gambia, Togo and Rwanda during this period.

Noting that tea exports started the year well, Gurdogan noted that he believes the export of the said product will increase even more in the coming days.

Emphasizing that the diversity of tourists coming to the region, whose volume is increasing day by day, contributed greatly to this increase, Gurdogan said, “The development of new innovative products by our companies and the tendency of our companies to produce products according to the consumer habits of each country are very important factors for the increase in exports. It is also very important to ensure sustainability for tea, which is the green gold of the regional economy.”

Drawing attention to climate change for this, Gurdogan added that the relevant Ministries should work on climate changes that are predicted to reach a global threat, and that the use of chemical fertilizers for tea plants should be banned and research and development activities should be given importance to increase yield per unit.
