Turkish automotive industry increased its production and exports in the first 2 months

In the first 2 months of the year, total production in the Turkish automotive industry increased by 14% compared to the same period of the previous year to 223 thousand 796 units, while automobile production increased by 23% to 134 thousand 474 units.

Automotive Industry Association (OSD) announced the production and export numbers and market data for January and February 2023.

Accordingly, in the first 2 months of the year, total automotive production increased by 14% compared to the same period of the previous year and reached 223 thousand 796 units. Automobile production, on the other hand, increased by 23% to 134 thousand 474 units. Together with the tractor production, the total production reached 233 thousand 731 units.

In the first 2 months of the year, commercial vehicle production increased by 3% compared to the same period of the previous year. In this period, while production in the heavy commercial vehicle group increased by 48%, the production in the light commercial vehicle group decreased by 1%. During this period, the capacity utilization rate of the automotive industry was 68%. On the basis of vehicle group, capacity utilization rates were 68% in light vehicles (cars + light commercial vehicles), 83% in the truck group, 34% in the bus-midibus group, and 78% in the tractor.

Automotive exports increased by 8% on the basis of units compared to the same period of the previous year.

In the first two months of the year, automotive exports increased by 8% on a unit basis compared to the same period of the previous year and amounted to 158 thousand 145 units. In this period, automobile exports increased by 14% compared to the same period of the previous year, while commercial vehicle exports were at a parallel level. Tractor exports, on the other hand, increased by 9% compared to the same period of 2022 and amounted to 3,416 units. According to the data of the Turkish Exporters Assembly, the total automotive industry exports ranked first in the sectoral exports with a share of 12.2% in the first two months of 2023. According to Uludag Exporters’ Association (UIB) data, total automotive exports in the first two months increased by 13% compared to the same period of 2022 and reached $5.5 billion. On a euro basis, it increased by 19% to €5.1 billion. In this period, exports of the main industry increased by 15% and supply industry exports increased by 10% in dollar terms.

The total market increased by 51% to 138 thousand 405 units.

In this period, the automobile market also increased by 44% and reached 96 thousand 195 units. Looking at the commercial vehicle market, in the first two months of the year, compared to the same period of the previous year, the total commercial vehicle market grew by 68%, the heavy commercial vehicle market by 60%, and the light commercial vehicle market by 70%. In the January-February period of 2023, the share of domestic vehicles in automobile sales was 36%, and the share of domestic vehicles in the light commercial vehicle market was 51% compared to the same period of the previous year.
