Construction works of giant petrochemical plant in Adana started

SASA Polyester Inc. started the construction work of the Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) facility to be established in Adana within the scope of the $935 million license and technical service agreement signed with the American Invista (Koch Industries).

Guven Kaya, Deputy General Manager of Investments and Investments Coordinator of SASA Polyester Inc., one of the world’s leading polyester producers, told Anadolu Agency (AA) that they are working to move the facility they took over from Sabanci Holding in 2015 to the world league with new investments.

Stating that they first commissioned the fiber facility with an investment of $1 billion in 2019 and increased their capacity from 350 thousand tons to 750 thousand tons, Kaya stated that they put the polyester facility into operation in their business last year and their capacity reached 1.4 million tons with new investments.

Kaya stated that after the completion of their fiber and polyester facilities, they included PTA production, which is their raw material, on their agenda, and that they signed a $935 million license and technical service agreement with the world giant Koch Industries in August last year.

Stating that they signed an engineering agreement with a company from Spain regarding the PTA production facility, Kaya said that they purchased a total area of 344 thousand square meters, 72 thousand square meters of which were from the metropolitan municipality.

Noting that the work was started on the land they acquired for their business, Kaya continued as follows:

“The construction works started about 2 months ago. At the moment, our only goal is to have our facility come into operation at full capacity by March 2023 at the latest. With the commissioning of this place, our capacity will be 1.6 million tons. We anticipate the total investment cost to be around $950 million. We are currently installing Turkey’s largest petrochemical plant. Currently, we have approached 4,500 in our number of employees. When we transferred to Erdemoglu, the number of our employees was around 1200. With this investment, we plan to provide additional employment for 400 more people.”

Kaya stated that SASA continues its investments without slowing down, and that the polyester facility with a production capacity of 1 million tons will be commissioned in 2024, and that with this, their total polyester investment capacity will reach 2.4 million tons.

Stating that they aim to invest $12 billion in the town of Yumurtalik in order to produce the raw material of polyester for 2030, Kaya said, “When we come to 2030, we will have commissioned the largest petrochemical plant and refinery integrated facilities of Turkey and Europe there.”

Kaya said that they currently export 30% of their production directly to around 30 countries as far as Europe, North Africa and China.

Emphasizing that when they took over, they brought their capacity from 350 thousand tons to 1.4 million tons and they started to produce raw materials, Kaya said:

“We will reach 2.4 million tons at the end of 2023 with the new capacities. When we reach 2.4 million tons, we will be producing approximately 2% of the total polyester installed capacity in the world as of today. We still have a long way to go. We will be one of the largest producers in the world. With these investments, we are becoming one of the largest producers in the world after China and India. This will open new doors for us. With the Yumurtalik project, we will become one of the largest petrochemical producers in Turkey and Europe.”
